A great step forward for sustainable building innovation at the MEZeroE Workshop in Barcelona !

On 29 May, experts from across the construction, research, and innovation sectors gathered at DFactory Barcelona for the MEZeroE Workshop, co-organised with Leitat Technological Center.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, discover the latest advances in building envelope technologies, and explore how collaboration can accelerate the transition towards more sustainable and energy-efficient buildings.

The workshop was a fantastic success, bringing together a highly engaged audience both onsite and online. Throughout the day, participants shared insights, experiences, and innovative solutions, creating a dynamic environment for discussion and networking.

MEZeroE is coming to an end.
Or maybe… this is where things truly begin.

When the project started, Europe’s construction sector was facing a paradox.

Innovation was moving fast — driven by climate urgency, research breakthroughs, and new technologies.

But the journey from laboratory to real buildings remained slow, fragmented, and uncertain.

Too many promising solutions were getting stuck between:
→ testing facilities
→ regulatory frameworks
→ and market realities

Knowledge existed.
But it wasn’t circulating fast enough to transform the industry.

Today, the MEZeroE project reaches its final chapter.
But the platform is live — and built for what comes next.

A digital ecosystem designed to:
✔ connect research and industry partners
✔ support collaboration and testing
✔ accelerate innovation
✔ help zero-energy building solutions reach the market faster

Because innovation does not happen in isolation.
And collaboration should not stop when a project ends.

This is not the end of MEZeroE.

After several years of European collaboration, MEZeroE has reached a major achievement: the final validation of its Open Innovation Digital Platform.

This is not just another digital tool. It is becoming a structured ecosystem designed to accelerate the development and deployment of high-performance building envelope solutions for nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB).

💡 What this platform enables:
↳ Accelerating innovation in nZEB building envelope technologies
↳ Connecting industry players, research centers, laboratories, and living labs across Europe
↳ Providing easier access to testing and validation infrastructures
↳ Supporting technology maturation from early-stage research to market readiness (TRL progression)

This is the question addressed in our contribution to Façade Forward, now available online.

In this video, Eurac Research Research researchers Miren Juaristi Gutiérrez, Aksh*t Gupta and Riccardo Pinotti explain how façade technologies move from research to real‑world application, and why this step is often challenging.

accelerate the development of nearly zero-energy building envelope solutions.

This final gathering was an opportunity to look back at everything achieved together:

But this is not the end.

The project may be coming to a close, but the MEZeroE platform was only the beginning.

Today, he leads the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design at the University of Stuttgart — following in the footsteps of pioneers like Werner Sobek and Frei Otto.
