Snapshots from our current site as we complete the carpentry work on the ceilings and drop beams, and prepare the rebar for the columns.
At this stage, at Meshal Engineering Consultancy, we focus on verifying structural details prior to pouring:
Levels and elevations: Thoroughly checking the ceiling’s horizontal alignment and adjusting the thresholds of doors and windows.
Bracing and reinforcement: Ensuring the adequacy of timber bracing and the distribution of beams and braces to prevent any sagging or buckling under concrete pressure.
Section dimensions: Verifying that the dimensions of beams and columns match the approved construction drawings.

This new set of photos shows another construction site in the advanced stages of foundation work (slabs and ground-level columns). Here is a detailed description of the work based on the photos from image_2.png to image_6.png:

Main work in progress (stages):

The photos show the concrete pouring process for the floor slabs (ground beams) and column bases, a stage that follows the rebar work and footing reinforcement we saw in the previous photos.

1. Concrete Pouring - (Images image_2.png and image_3.png):

These images are the most important because they show the pouring process actually taking place.

Concrete Transport: Workers use handcarts to transport the ready-mix concrete from the mixing area to the pouring site. In image_2.png and image_3.png, two workers are shown pushing a handcart filled with concrete over wooden walkways (temporary platforms) built atop the floor formwork.

Wooden walkways: Walkways made of wooden planks were built over the formwork to allow workers and handcarts to move (relatively) safely over the rebar and formwork without damaging them.

Mixing area: In the background of image_3.png on the left, a mechanical concrete mixer (beehive mixer) and piles of materials (sand and gravel) and bags of cement are visible, confirming that the concrete is being mixed on-site.

Compaction/Vibration: In image_2.png on the right, a worker is seen holding a mechanical vi****or or a piece of wood to compact the concrete inside the formwork to ensure all voids around the rebar are filled and to prevent voids.

The main work shown in the photos involves the preparation and construction of reinforced concrete columns for the upper floors. This process includes the following steps:
1. Wooden Formwork:
This is the most prominent and voluminous element in the photos. A complex and massive wooden structure (beams, joists, and plywood panels) was constructed for two main purposes:
Creating vertical formwork: The wooden formwork serves as casting molds for the future concrete columns. These molds are made of formwork panels and carefully secured vertically to ensure the columns are straight.
Building the Scaffolding: An interlocking horizontal and vertical wooden structure was built to serve as scaffolding or an elevated work platform. This structure is necessary to allow workers to access the top of the column formwork to install rebar later, or to pour concrete from above (if poured manually).
Non-compliance: As mentioned earlier, this rudimentary formwork/scaffolding lacks basic safety measures and appears unstable as a work platform.
2. Rebar Work:
Although the rebar inside the vertical formwork is not clearly visible in these photos (because it is surrounded by wooden panels), the presence of so many wooden column forms necessarily implies that rebar work is underway. The workers on the elevated platform may be in the process of securing the rebar inside the forms or preparing it for pouring.
3. Concrete Preparation:
A mechanical concrete mixer (beehive mixer) is visible in the center of the image. This mixer is used to mix the concrete components (cement, sand, gravel, and water) directly on site.
A worker (in the first photo) is standing near the mixer, apparently preparing it for operation or feeding it with materials.
There is a large bucket (bowl/trough) beneath the mixer’s discharge chute to receive the concrete.

1. Checking Formwork and Dimensions

Reinforcement: Ensure that the formwork is properly secured and supported by sufficient beams to withstand the concrete pressure during pouring, preventing warping or formwork bursting.

Dimensions and Angles: Carefully review the measurements and ensure they match the engineering drawings precisely. Verify the straightness of the lines and the angles (squares).

2. Insulation and Protection

Plastic Cover: It's excellent that you're using a green plastic cover as shown in the pictures. This helps protect the concrete from groundwater seepage and prevents the concrete from absorbing water, thus retaining water.

Site: Ensure that any wooden debris or nails are removed from the work site before starting with the reinforcement or pouring the concrete.

3. Steel and Casting (Next Steps)

Concrete Spacers: When placing reinforcing steel, ensure you use spacers (small plastic or concrete pieces) approximately 5 cm above the steel reinforcement, surrounding it with steel reinforcement on all sides to prevent rust.

Mechanical Vi****or: Don't forget to use a vi****or during casting to prevent honeycombing (air voids) within the concrete mix.

Reinforced Formwork: The formwork for the columns and sides has been completed, and the slab has been prepared using sturdy wooden beams to ensure a level concrete surface.

Reinforced Steelwork: The process of reinforcing the columns (preparing the steel cage) and connecting the stirrups has begun, ensuring precise geometric distribution of the steel according to the plans.

Excavation and Site Preparation for Construction

2. Current Work Description:

Excavation Operations: Excavation work has commenced using a hydraulic excavator (Komatsu PC120) to reach the required foundation level.

Soil Management: Debris and clay soil have been removed, and the site has been cleaned and prepared.

Work is being carried out under direct supervision to ensure the excavation is straight and the site's sides (adjacent walls) are secured.

Groundwater/Surface Water: Water accumulation has been observed at the excavation site. This is currently being addressed, and the site is being dried to ensure soil safety before the placement of the backfill layer or plain concrete.

Protection of Neighbors: Work is proceeding cautiously near the walls of adjacent buildings to ensure their foundations are not affected.

4. Next Steps:

Complete the leveling of the foundation and remove all excess soil.

Prepare the site for pouring the "leaning layer" (plain concrete) after ensuring the soil is completely dry.
