🌊 What does it take to build the ocean?
More than ever before, we are placing infrastructure on and under the sea - wind farms, cables, pipelines, ports and coastal defences. But before any of it can be built, the seabed has to be mapped, measured and monitored to exacting standards.
In Part 2 of our three‑part series, we explore “The built ocean, and the survey work behind everything we put on the seabed.”
We look at how modern hydrography is governed by the International Hydrographic Organization’s S‑44 standard, why shallow‑water accuracy is critical, and how offshore wind projects rely on a decade of coordinated surveys - from site characterisation and UXO detection to 30 years of operational monitoring.
We also highlight how this work is rapidly shifting to uncrewed platforms, with electric USVs now delivering large‑scale seabed surveys at a fraction of the carbon footprint of crewed vessels.
Because beneath every turbine, cable route and coastal defence lies a seabed that must be understood in fine detail - again and again - and the right platform is what makes that possible.
