Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S

Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S Welcome to our waste-to-energy and biomass community of latest news, events, case stories, jobs, res Chris Coggins.

Creating a better climate and environment often starts with our technology. Babcock & Wilcox Vølund is one of the world's leading suppliers of equipment and technologies designed to convert household waste and biomass into thermal energy. We have delivered more than 500 solutions within waste-to-energy, biomass, and fossil fuels. Founded in 1898 and headquartered in Esbjerg, Denmark, the company i

s 100% owned by Babcock & Wilcox, USA. Our companies currently employ over 10,000 people worldwide of which 400 are employed by Babcock & Wilcox Vølund. Throughout the years we have continuously developed our range of boilers, grates and firing systems - systems that enable us to solve and fulfill our clients' needs and expectations regarding plants with optimum energy utilization and reliability under maximum consideration of the environment. The Babcock & Wilcox Vølund areas of technology:

Waste-to-energy plants:
Thermal treatment of waste generates electricity and thermal energy which can be substituted for other fossil energy resources but thermal waste treatment is also one of the most complex combustion processes. The reason for Babcock & Wilcox Vølund market leadership in Scandinavia is that we have managed to turn innovation into mature and wellfunctioning products. This can only be done when experience and knowledge is combined. Thermal treatment provides a safe and optimal way of extracting the energy and eliminates the harmful substances because organic pollutants, toxins and infectious substances are effectively destroyed at high temperatures. The energy from thermal treatment of waste is considered a renewable energy. This is why thermal treatment is now part of sustainable environmental policies in many developed countries. Biomass energy plants:
Generation of energy from biomass lives up to the increasing global political demand to reduce emissions, but can at the same time also recycle biological residues from many forms of industrial production, thereby solving serious problems with organic waste. Our biomass technologies were developed to be incorporated into the different stages involved in generating energy from biomass. The systems and components have been adapted to the many different ways of producing biomass energy from country to country all over the world. This means we can supply energy production systems for various types of biomass fuel where the required energy end-products also differ widely - heat, electricity, syngas, or bio-oil. Multi-fuel energy plants:
The advantage of the multi-fuel solution is that it provides a higher degree of flexibility. By compiling and integrating various combustion technologies waste and several types of biomass can be used in the same plant including some types of refuse derived fuels (RDF), and thereby making the plant less dependent on a single type of fuel. Combining Babcock & Wilcox Vølund’s extensive experience and know how in both combustion of waste and biomass make our muliti-fuel technology unique in the market. The challenge lies in the widely differing characteristics of biomass fuel and certain waste fractions. Multi-fuel technology must be able to handle the various methods of combustion as different types of biomass fuel do not burn in the same way which is why firing with multi-fuel requires advanced technological innovation. Emissions from waste-to-energy plants are healthier to breath than the air in some cities. In fact, 15 minutes of millennial fireworks celebrations in London produced more dioxin than a century’s operation of the South East London Combined Heat and Power Waste-to-Energy facility! A grate? A DynaGrate®? A Vølund grate? What are these and how do they work?

It’s fair to say that not everyone knows how a waste-to-energy plant functions and how the different components inside the plant all play a vital part in the combustion of the waste and how this can help our planet towards a greener future and a world without landfills.

Let us help you a little and read about some of our grates here:
