Can you guess where the mic is?

Sennheiser MKE 2 with a Windbubble PRO, hidden in a scarf.

The Windbubble PRO is a fur wind cover for lav mics, and in this setup it does two jobs. It makes a room for the mic to sit in, and it protects the mic from wind.

For the best sound, a lav hidden in a scarf should sit as far from the neck as possible. Close in, the chin masks some frequencies.

Add tape to keep the cable under control.

Closer to the mic means more low end.

That is proximity effect. Directional mics boost low frequencies as the sound source gets nearer. Omnidirectional mics do not.

It happens because a directional capsule responds to the pressure difference between its front and back, and that difference grows at low frequencies up close.

On a boom it means the tone changes with distance.

Use this method to get rid of cable noise with thicker lav cables.

It’s the loop method everyone knows, but with the Cable Saver.

The Cable Saver is a rubber mount that decouples the cable from the capsule, so cable handling noise doesn’t travel up to the mic.

Put your headphones on and tell us if you heard a difference.
