Embedded Innovations in Focus: emtrion at embedded world

This year, emtrion GmbH is at the embedded world, the international leading trade fair for embedded technologies in Nuremberg. Our team is using the event to gain a comprehensive overview of the latest trends, new products and technological developments in the industry.

A particular focus for us is personal exchange with partners, manufacturers and developers in the embedded field. embedded world provides an ideal platform to deepen existing partnerships, establish new contacts, and collaboratively discuss future projects and innovative solution approaches.

At the same time, we are taking away numerous new impulses: from high-performance embedded hardware and modern software platforms to energy-efficient system architectures. This year, EDGE AI and Defense were particularly the focus. These insights and ideas feed directly into our development work, with the goal of continuing to offer our customers high-performance, reliable, and future-proof embedded solutions.

We look forward to exciting conversations, fresh perspectives, and many inspiring impressions from the world of embedded technologies.

emtrion GmbH: Roadmap for Embedded DevOps – Focus on Automated Compliance

Industrial software development is undergoing a paradigm shift. With the enforcement of the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), cybersecurity for connected products in Europe is becoming mandatory. For manufacturers of embedded systems, this means that security-by-design, continuous vulnerability management, and a mandatory Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) are no longer optional—they are regulatory requirements.

emtrion GmbH supports companies in strategically integrating these requirements into a scalable embedded DevOps roadmap. At the core is automated compliance within the CI/CD pipeline. Modern Linux-based systems, often built with the Yocto Project, consist of hundreds of software packages. Manually maintaining license and component lists is no longer feasible.

The solution: automated SBOM generation directly within the build process, for example in SPDX format. Each new firmware version therefore includes a complete, machine-readable documentation of all contained components. Combined with continuous CVE scanning, security becomes an integral part of every commit.

By integrating platforms such as GitLab, transparent audit trails are created: requirements, code changes, test results, and security reports are seamlessly linked. Compliance thus evolves from a downstream verification task into a built-in element of daily development.

The result: reduced audit costs, faster certification processes, and significantly lower product liability risks. Companies that adopt automated embedded DevOps structures early secure decisive competitive advantages—both technologically and regulatorily.

emtrion supports this transformation process with expertise in DevSecOps, Board Support Packages, real-time Linux, and security monitoring—laying the foundation for a future-proof embedded strategy.

Cyber Resilience Act and IEC 62443 as Innovation Drivers

The European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) marks a turning point for the embedded industry. From 2025 to 2027, compliance with strict cybersecurity requirements will become mandatory for all connected products in the EU. Manufacturers will not only need to identify and fix vulnerabilities but also provide a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) documenting every single component of the system. Non-compliance can result in substantial fines of up to €15 million or 2.5% of global annual revenue.

The CRA enforces a shift from a “performance-first” to a “security-first” development approach. This means that security analyses, automated code scans, and vulnerability monitoring must become integral parts of the CI/CD pipeline. Analyses suggest that companies already implementing automated SBOM generation and continuous security testing will gain a significant competitive advantage over competitors who only respond shortly before the regulation comes into effect.

IEC 62443: Security in Industrial Automation
Infrastructure and Containerization: The Basis for Reproducibility
The first success factor for a scalable embedded DevOps strategy is a consistent and reproducible build infrastructure. In traditional embedded development, teams often suffer from the phenomenon of “special workstations,” where build results depend on the installed toolchains and libraries on a single developer’s machine. To break these silos, containerization of the development environment using Docker is essential.

Cybersecurity becomes mandatory: EU standard EN 18031 binding since August 2025

Cybersecurity is no longer just a “nice-to-have”; it has been legally required for connected products in the EU since August 1, 2025. The new EN 18031 series, developed under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), enforces strict security requirements for connected radio and IoT devices.

The EN 18031 series consists of three harmonized standards defining specific cybersecurity requirements: EN 18031-1 for internet-enabled radio devices, EN 18031-2 for devices that process data (e.g., personal or location data), and EN 18031-3 for devices handling virtual currencies or monetary values.

The goal is to protect networks, safeguard data and privacy, and prevent fraud, key aspects that are mandatory under the RED. Without these compliance proofs, manufacturers cannot obtain CE marking. This not only poses legal risks but can also lead to sales stops, recalls, or sanctions in the EU market.

Many producers of small and medium-sized systems, from smart home gateways to connected industrial sensors, are still surprised by the breadth of the requirements. The standard requires a secure-by-design approach, risk analyses, access controls, and protection mechanisms throughout the product’s lifecycle.

For many companies, this means acting early. In addition to implementing the standard, it is important to provide proof to market surveillance authorities and, if necessary, undergo a type examination by a notified body.

This is exactly where emtrion’s free Cyber Compliance Check comes in: practical, standards-compliant, and easy to understand, it helps manufacturers assess their products for compliance with EN 18031 and other relevant regulations before costly market problems arise. Cybersecurity is no longer an add-on; it is now a central competitive factor in the connected product market.

emtrion GmbH donates to Kinderhospiz Sterntaler e.V. and Schaukelpferd e.V.

At the end of 2025, emtrion GmbH made a conscious decision to forgo traditional Christmas gifts and instead contribute to a good cause. The funds originally intended for gifts were donated to Kinderhospiz Sterntaler e.V. in Mannheim and Schaukelpferd e.V..

With these donations, emtrion aims to support families facing a life-limiting illness of their child and to help children and adolescents in need. Kinderhospiz Sterntaler e.V. accompanies affected children, young people, and their families with great professional competence, compassion, and heart—a work that relies on donations and deserves the highest recognition. Schaukelpferd e.V. also provides valuable support in child welfare and assists families in difficult situations.

For emtrion, social engagement is an important part of corporate responsibility. Especially at the end of the year, this commitment is meant to demonstrate solidarity and humanity.

We sincerely thank Kinderhospiz Sterntaler e.V. and Schaukelpferd e.V. for their invaluable work and wish all involved, as well as our partners and customers, a successful start to 2026.

emtrion at the ESE Congress 2025 in Sindelfingen

In December 2025, this year’s ESE Congress took place in Sindelfingen, and emtrion was on-site to gain valuable insights and network within the industry. The event is particularly attractive to us due to its proximity and the excellent opportunities it offers for direct exchange with partners and customers.

The congress covered a broad spectrum of current embedded topics: Linux debugging, testing & quality, Artificial Intelligence, IoT & Industry, Automotive, Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), Safety, Zephyr, real-time systems, Rust, implementation, and much more.

For emtrion, the highlight was clearly Cyber Security, where we have already successfully supported several customers. The sessions provided valuable insights on how security requirements can be efficiently implemented in embedded systems.

Overall, the ESE Congress was an excellent opportunity to follow current developments, establish new contacts, and strengthen existing partnerships. We look forward to incorporating the insights gained into our projects and continuing to succeed in the fields of Embedded Systems, Linux debugging, Cyber Security, and beyond.
