How can pilgrimages be organised in a healthy and sustainable way?

Pilgrimages are a unique and unforgettable journey. Both the general surrounding conditions and the spiritual experience itself contribute to it. Therefore, the organisation of pilgrimages is constantly being improved and the system is being looked at holistically. This is a huge undertaking and presents Saudi Arabia with a number of major challenges. One key aspect is the healthcare system.

SL Rasch has been involved for years in the further development of infrastructure in the most sacred places in the country to contribute to the general well-being of pilgrims. But apart from the infrastructure, what are the main health aspects during the pilgrimage to make it a safe event for everybody? We talked with Dr. Maliha Hashmi about this. She is a global healthcare leader and was awarded "Women Icon of the Year" in the MENA region. Named among the world´s top female pioneers in health and longevity sciences, she has led groundbreaking advancements in precision medicine and next-generation healthcare. Her overarching focus is on designing systems that are proactive, personalised and sustainable. Advertising graphics of the 1950s and 1960s

Join us in celebrating the art of Lilo Rasch-Naegele, grandmother of our CEO Mustafa Rasch, at the Museum im Kleihues-Bau in Kornwestheim close to Stuttgart. Her artistic legacy can be admired in the "Ideale Linien. Werbegrafik der 50er und 60er Jahre von Otto Glaser, Lilo Rasch-Naegele und Franz Weiss“ exhibition. This fascinating insight into the advertising graphics of the 50s & 60s offers a look at original design drawings and finished materials created for clients like Triumph, Sc*****er and Salamander. Back then, advertising often showed far more than the actual product (compared to today); the entire lifestyle associated with the products was placed at the centre of consideration. The exhibition provides insights into how advertising graphics were developed and what cultural significance they had in the post-war period. Engineering excellence meets Islamic heritage

Tradition – innovation – culture. Our constructions live from a wide variety of influences and combine them all in one piece of architecture. Our Head of Engineering Stefan spoke to Saudi Projects about the different approaches that come together in our projects. He talks about why traditional form-finding strategies, which the pioneer of lightweight constructions, Frei Otto, shaped decades ago, are more modern and important than ever in a world characterised by sustainability like today. But also how we combine these strategies with state-of-the-art engineering methods and how we are part of the holiest places in the world through our knowledge of islamic architecture.
Always prioritising customer and user needs in our architectural designs, always combining aesthetics with functionality, always integrating our structures into the existing environment with the utmost respect. This makes us an essential partner for Saudi Arabia’s future projects in line with the country´s vision 2030. You can find the link tot he article in the comments.

The Power of Parametric Design

The parametric design method has become essential for engineers to be able to reliably plan projects such as tunnels, bridges and other structures. Parametric design describes the computer-aided generation of geometries that can be customised by changing individual parameters. Geometry is one of the fundamental principles of engineering and is used to make structures as robust as possible, taking into account shape, angle and size. Structural analyses are used to examine buildings under various loads, such as wind loads acting on skyscrapers or aircraft, or snow loads on roofs in mountainous regions. Structural engineering therefore focuses on the optimised design of load-bearing structures to ensure their stability, safety and durability. In our new blog article we deal with parametric design and the development of a customised fitness function component with GhPython in Grasshopper. You can find the link in the comments.

In a world of constant change, why should buildings stand still?

Architecture must also remain in motion. Responding to global challenges that we face today requires more than fixed buildings, fixed use cases and rigid thinking. We need more openness, more foresight, more adaptability. Designs should serve a wide variety of scenarios. Structures should be able to adapt to circumstances and requirements with as little effort as possible in order to offer the greatest possible added value. This flexibility of use makes structures extremely valuable and meaningful for a long time.

That is why the current exhibition "Restless Architecture" at MAXXI Rome is so important. Curated by Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, transformable architecture is shown in its full range. From the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokio which, thanks to its capsule modules, could flexibly meet the most diverse needs of residents and the environment. To Diller, Scofidio + Renfro´s „The Shed“ in New York, which can create additional space for events with a retractable outer shell if required. To our Umbrella Shading Concept, which can flexibly extend a fixed building structure as required and provide shade either selectively or over an entire area.
From mobile and adaptive to operable and ecodynamic – the wide variety of designs can still be admired at MAXXI Rome until 16 march.

Jeddah Opera House Announcement

We are more than happy to announce that we are involved in the construction of Jeddah Opera House, a world-class and unique performing arts center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As the first opera house in the country, Jeddah Opera House will provide a unique opportunity for locals and visitors to experience art and culture up close in an ultra-modern atmosphere with traditional elements. Artists from all over the world will be attracted to live out their creativity in this eye-catching venue, being inspired by the surrounding and inspiring other people with their magic.

SL Rasch has been commissioned with the façade package, namely the design, procurement, manufacturing, delivery, fabrication and installation of façades. The façade systems vary greatly; like the country and society, they are very diverse. From stone façades to aluminum rainscreen cladding to wooden mashrabiya – each part of the building is considered and designed individually, taking greatest care of every detail. Adhering to LEED/MOSTADAM requirements, we demonstrate our commitment to environmental sustainability. For a transparent and seamless project planning and implementation, we rely on a comprehensive BIM ex*****on. Unified project data management with the most up-to-date information across platforms, real-time workflow integration and real-time coordination between site- and office teams enable a 360-degree communication.

With the design of the façades, we want to make our contribution to enhancing Jeddah´s architectural landscape and we want to showcase our dedication to creating a lasting value. We can hardly wait to see the finished building!

Project Jubilee Najaf Courtyard Umbrellas

Throwback to this innovative umbrella project in Iraq with a first of their kind designed and built pioneering solution for the membrane-mast connection, enhancing the water drainage of the membranes into the mast. We installed a shading project that blends in perfectly with the mosque's appearance, both when opened and closed. For 10 years now, these elegant structures have provided much-needed shade and shelter for countless visitors, becoming a valued part of the surrounding and a striking visual statement. The eight retractable umbrellas shade an extensive area of 2.650 square metres, incorporating a special LED lighting system that automatically changes intensity according to pre-programmed prayer times. This feature ensures that the structures are not just functional but also contribute to the spiritual ambiance by aligning with the cultural practices of the community.

We're proud to create lasting structures that enhance public spaces, both from a functional and aesthetical point of view. Shaping the environment is incredibly exciting and fulfilling.

The LivingCircles are taking shape!

Last week, we visited our project in Kirchheim unter Teck. In collaboration with LivingCircles GmbH, we are creating nature-based educational spaces for kindergartens. The entire design and concept of this unique project comes from LivingCircles GmbH, with the aim of teaching children about natural cycles and sustainability right from the very beginning. This way, they understand the connections in nature early on, help grow and prepare food and develop independence. The four-group nature kindergarten will accommodate up to 80 children, fostering creativity and growth in harmony with their environment. The buildings, more than just structures, will be a living part of the natural cycle.

SL Rasch acts as a partner for the structural engineering and membrane design. We contributed to the static calculations, ensuring stability and safety for various load cases and are responsible for membrane shapes and wooden structures. Sustainability plays a central role in the construction and materials, reflecting our own principles, those of LivingCircles GmbH and the overall project’s vision. We are pleased to now be designing the fifth nature kindergarten with LivingCircles GmbH and are excited about further joint projects.

Welcome to our new company sign!

We have been working on it and designing it for a long time, but now we have finally been able to unveil it. Our product designers and graphic designer have put a lot of creativity and effort into the design and production. The result is a geometric abstraction of one of our most important and longstanding designs – the umbrella, seen from above. No other construction stands for SL Rasch to such an extent, is so versatile and customisable and has enabled us to protect people in the most diverse countries from the effects of the weather.
The brushed stainless steel sheet was laser-cut. A substructure, which was 3D printed, determines the inclination of the stainless steel triangles. For better visibility, even at night, an RGB LED strip was also installed, which can light up in different colours.

A big thank you to everyone who was involved in this process and contributed to this internal project. Thanks to you, our headquarters are now perfectly recognisable.

Restless Architecture

We are thrilled to announce that SL Rasch is proudly featured in the current exhibition “Restless Architecture” at MAXXI Museo nazionale, curated by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The exhibition deals with the fascinating world of architecture in motion, highlighting alternative forms of constructions that are not rigid, but can move and adapt to circumstances or even have separate, mobile elements. The idea behind it is more than plausible: in an era characterised by constant change and disruptive influences, architecture, too, must evolve and remain dynamic. Static structures can no longer adequately serve our rapidly shifting environment, which is why we need flexible and responsive solutions tailored to contemporary needs.

The four principles that frame the exhibition are: mobility, adaptability, operability and ecodynamism. SL Rasch is part of the ecodynamism section, where we present a model that of a convertible shading roof incorporating 21 umbrellas. It was already built back in 1987, but has not lost any of its relevance since then, in fact it has gained enormously underscoring the necessity to respond to environmental demands.

The exhibition is open until March 16, 2025 from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm and definitely worth a visit! It is time to rethink spaces.
