Frida has finally got some company! 🐶🐶

Last month, Mina joined us as our new ‘Feel-Good’ Manager, and since then there’s definitely been more buzz in the office.

The two of them create a more relaxed atmosphere within the team, and you really notice just how important little moments like these can be in everyday working life.

After all, a good working environment isn’t just created by processes and tasks, but also by the atmosphere in between.

👉🏼 No Carbon? No Steel!

Carbon is the most important alloying element in steel: without it, steel would not exist.

It is essential that steel contains no more than 2.1% carbon.

As the carbon content increases, the hardness and strength of unalloyed steels increase. From a carbon content of 0.8%, the strength begins to decrease again.

The effect of carbon is of great importance in materials science. For example, when used as an alloying element in iron, carbon lowers the melting point.

In addition to carbon, all unalloyed steels contain phosphorus and sulphur, which are introduced unintentionally during the steel-making process.

By deliberately adding other alloying elements such as manganese and silicon, specific properties can be tailored into the steel. Only then does the steel become an alloyed tool steel!

There are millions of building blocks, and every single one has to fit perfectly! 💡

For this to work, it’s not just the machine that matters, but above all the right steel for the moulds.

For this purpose, you could use 1.2085 AISI / SAE 420 FM tool steel, for example.

It has good corrosion resistance, which is very important when dealing with moisture and processing aggressive plastics.

This steel is a good choice for plastic moulds and offers an excellent combination of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, dimensional stability and machinability.

Its excellent dimensional stability ensures that the famous bricks fit together perfectly!

An exciting example of how precision tool steel influences our everyday lives, often without us even noticing. 💪🏻

What is HSS PM 4, AISI / SAE M4 high-speed steel? 💡

HSS PM 4 or AISI / SAE M4 impresses with its very clean and homogeneous microstructure with evenly spread carbides which optimise its wear resistance.

It has great wear resistance, toughness, high hardness capabilities with a fine and uniform microstructure.

In comparison with other cold work steels, which loses its hardness at about 200°C, the PM 4 keeps its hardness to a temperature of 600°C and can realise speeds up to 3 to 4 times higher.

The base for its abilities lie within it alloys as well as its martensitic microstructure.

The high carbon and vanadium content lend the PM 4its exceptional abrasive resistance which makes it suitable for cold work punches, machining abrasive alloys and cutting applications at high speeds.

💡 Without steel, there would be no modern infrastructure as we know it today.

From pipelines and railway lines to high-voltage pylons and power stations: steel forms the foundation of key systems in our global economy. It enables energy supply, transport networks and industrial production on a scale that would be inconceivable without this material.

As early as the 19th century, steel demonstrated its potential. The railway bridges of that era still stand in many places today and are a striking example of how this material has revolutionised transport and trade in a lasting way. They have not only connected regions, but also opened up entire markets and accelerated economic growth.

Even today, steel remains an indispensable component of modern infrastructure. Whether in the expansion of renewable energies, in logistics or in international trade – steel is found wherever stability, resilience and durability are required.

The crucial question is therefore not whether we need steel, but how we can use it more efficiently, sustainably and strategically in the future.

What role is steel likely to play in the next phase of global infrastructure?

What happens when you add nickel to steel? 💡

Alongside chromium and molybdenum, nickel is the most important alloying element for austenitic stainless steels.

First and foremost, nickel additions improve the toughness, and also the hardenability, tensile strength, yield strength, corrosion resistance and heat resistance of the steel.

Nickel occurs in combination with at least one other chemical element, for example, nickel-copper, nickel-iron, nickel-iron-chromium, nickel-chromium, nickel-molybdenum-chromium, nickel-chromium-cobalt, or other multi-material alloys.

In austenitic stainless steels, the nickel content is between 8 and 26 %, in duplex stainless steels usually between 2 and 7 % and in ferritic grades usually a maximum of 2 %.

👉🏻 One example is 1.4301 AISI / SAE 304 stainless steel, it contains 8.0 - 10.5% nickel.

It is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel with good workability, weldability, heat resistance, strength and good mechanical properties at low temperatures.

Now that it’s finally getting warmer again, steel is a must! 🌞

For example the highly polished 1.2083 AISI / SAE ~420 tool steel!

It is ideal for making plastic moulds that produce perfect, crystal-clear ice cubes. Just the thing for drinks in warm weather. 😁

The advantages:

- High corrosion resistance for a long service life
- Extremely smooth surfaces for flawless results
- Excellent polishability
- Good wear resistance
- No adhesion

Whether in restaurants or at home, 1.2083 makes all the difference.

Just three years ago she was with us for Girls’ Day, today she got drafted to the WNBA for the Portland Fire. 🚀

Sometimes stories unfold faster than you think.

Frieda Bühner visited us three years ago as part of Girls’ Day, back when she was still playing for the GiroLive-Panthers in Osnabrück.

Curious, committed and full of energy.

After playing in Spain, she’s now taking the next big step: being drafted into the WNBA in Portland!

Bühner is just one of four female basketball players from Germany to play in the WNBA.

Congratulations, Frieda, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for your next big step! 🤞🏻

Did you know 1.2210 is also known as silver steel? 👀

It is a tool steel that is also known under its chemical discription 115CrV3 and has a good combination of mechanical properties which finds its uses in many applications.

This steel has a unique combination of hardness, wear resistance and toughness, which make it possible to use it for tool making as well as mechanical engineering.

It finds its uses in many applications, especially when precision and high mechanical stresses come into play.

For example:

- Milling cutters
- Countersinks
- Engraving tools
- Punches
- Wood chisels
