Three generations, one purpose, and only one of them got it perfectly right. 🖤 The E28 started it all in 1985 by dropping the M1's inline-six into a sedan, and it was raw, analog and hand-built. The E34 added power and polish, growing to a 3.8L and 340 hp, and it even gave us a Touring. Then the E39 arrived in 1998 with a 4.9L V8, 394 hp and a manual-only gearbox, and it hit the sweet spot between brutality and refinement that BMW has been chasing ever since. The E28 has the legend and the E34 has the soul, but the E39 is simply the most complete car of the three. It's fast enough to still embarrass modern machinery, and its steering and sound have never been matched. Nostalgia will tell you the original is untouchable, but the numbers and the driving experience say the E39 is the peak. Do you agree, or does the boxy E28 still win your heart? 👇
