eloping a business concept and a show cave concept to a complete equipment installation (controlled LED lighting system, FRP route paths, monitoring system). Tours to this cave have not been properly organized before and it was in a poor condition, due to vandalizm. In 2011, Romanian speleologists and our ‘Cave Lighting’ Team cleaned and restored the Fundata cave and turned it into a successful show cave. It was an all-inclusive package of work from planning to the opening of the cave. We partially or completely upgraded/ replaced outdated electrical equipment and redesigned lighting systems in some of the oldest show caves in Europe, Postojnska Jama (Slovenia), Grotte de Clamouse (France), Grotte de Han (Belgium). In some caves we designed and installed electrical power supply systems, lighting systems, music and light systems (DMX-show) and monitoring systems. These were developed according to customers’, (Prometeus) Cave (Georgia), Dechen cave (Germany), requirements. Besides modern lighting and music systems, our project specialists developed an unique software which integrates all of these systems into one network. It also allows remote controlling and if necessary, correct operation of all systems, Höllgrotten Cave (CH), Wendelstein Cave (DE), Erdmanns Cave (Germany), Belianska Cave (Slovakia), together (something similar to a ‘smart home’ system). The ‘Cave Lighting™’ project is constantly developing. We observe modern scientific achievements and cooperate with leading speleological organizations and associations (ISCA, UIS, VDHK, Karst Institute (Postojna), speleological clubs in different countries, etc.). We continue to perfect our equipment and promote our specialists’ self-development. In 2014, we realized the reconstruction of the cave in Germany that made such an unforgettable negative impression on the ‘Cave Lighting™’ creators ten years ago and started ‘Cave Lighting™’.

Meet Oleg Klimchuk

💡 Oleg started working with Cave Lighting in 2023.

His story underground, however, began decades earlier.

🧭 Born into a family of cavers, he grew up joining his parents on expeditions. What began as part of childhood became a life shaped by exploration, cave diving, photography and some of the most demanding underground environments in the world.

🌊 In 2005, during a CAVEX expedition to Krubera–Voronya, Oleg became the first caver to reach the bottom of what was then the world’s deepest known cave after crossing four flooded passages.

So when he joined Cave Lighting, the underground itself was nothing new.

The challenge was different.

📸 Photography had taught him to work with composition, perspective, light and shadow. With Cave Lighting, he can use that same eye on a much larger scale — not for one photograph, but for an entire visitor journey.

🔦 As a freelance collaborator, Oleg now works on Cave Lighting projects in different countries, combining his technical underground experience with that visual instinct.

What he particularly enjoys is the creative side of the work: experimenting with beam angles, intensity and colour temperature, and seeing how small changes in light can completely transform the perception of a space.

And caves rarely make things easy.

💧 At Mira Cave in Slovakia, for example, the team installed luminaires directly in an underground river and lakes — a project that brought together several parts of Oleg’s world: caving, diving, technical work and light.

⏳️ From 22 September to 1 October 2026, the 10th ISCA Congress will bring the international show-cave community together in Dordogne, France 🇨🇵, for an inspiring exchange of ideas, experiences and expertise.

Discover the faces behind Cave Lighting — the people who bring their unique expertise to projects around the world.

Meet Radu Puscas, a Romanian caver with over 4 decades of underground experience.

🪨 Radu’s story with caves began nearly 40 years ago, with an invitation he was not entirely sure he wanted to accept.

🧭 He went anyway — and caving became far more than a pastime. Over the years, Radu became a highly experienced caver, also developing skills in cave diving, underground mapping and cave photography. Today, he describes the underground simply as “a second home.”

💡 Funny enough, Cave Lighting started in much the same way.

In 2019, when a friend suggested he join the team, Radu was sceptical. His world was natural caves, exploration and speleology, and he did not really see the appeal of working in showcaves.

Still, he gave it a try.

His first project was a lighting renovation in a mine in Germany. After several weeks working in the cold, he found himself joking:

😄 “What the hell am I doing here? Miners stop at fifty, and I’m starting at fifty?”

Other projects followed — and, as Radu says, things improved once he learned how to dress properly for the job.

📸 Today, he regularly joins Cave Lighting projects as a freelance collaborator, bringing decades of underground experience and the eye of a cave photographer.

✨ One of the things he enjoys most is seeing some of his own lighting ideas become reality. For a photographer, there is something powerful in that permanence: unlike a photograph, the way a formation is illuminated can remain there for years, becoming part of the experience of thousands of visitors.

🤝 And then, of course, there is the team — passionate people from different countries who understand the underground, exchange ideas and create something together.

Two invitations, decades apart. A little hesitation both times.

🔦 And both ended up leading Radu somewhere he was very happy to go.

Deep beneath the Belgian Ardennes, the majestic Salle d’Armes at the Grottes de Han becomes the stage for ORIGIN—an immersive journey through the origins of our universe. ✨

🪨 Located around 110 metres underground, this immense natural chamber is transformed through video mapping, lasers, sound and light, revealing the remarkable formations sculpted by the River Lesse.

🎭 ORIGIN was conceived and directed by Luc Petit, the internationally renowned artistic director, designer and stage director.

💡 Cave Lighting’s contribution focused on the permanent background and pathway lighting.
⚙️ During the final technical phase, we also integrated the show-control system and the cave’s lighting-control system within a PLC network, bringing both systems together in one coordinated control environment.

👀 This video presents only a short edited excerpt from the show—we invite you to visit the Grottes de Han and experience the complete production in its spectacular underground setting.

Meet the faces behind the Cave Lighting team- The people whose passion and expertise bring underground worlds to life.

Meet Michel Renda — A lifetime underground

For Michel, caves have never been simply places to visit. They are places to explore, understand, document—and protect.

🧗‍♂️ He began caving in 1975, at the age of 15, and soon developed a passion for underground exploration, science, prehistory and photography. Over the years, Michel also became a renowned speleophotographer, contributing to books and being invited to photograph caves for dedicated projects. His underground journeys have taken him across Europe and much further afield, including several expeditions to Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico.

🌱 Conservation has always been part of that journey. Michel became deeply involved in protecting karst environments and also worked to strengthen the relationship between traditional cavers and showcaves—two worlds he has always seen as closely connected.

His path crossed with Cave Lighting almost by chance. 💡

🤝 While carrying out an expert assessment for a cave project in Morocco, Michel became involved in discussions about reopening the site to visitors.
A later encounter with Alexander Chrapko at a Cuevatur event in Spain brought them together again, eventually leading Alexander to invite him to help develop Cave Lighting’s presence in France, Spain and Italy.

🇫🇷 Today, Michel is Cave Lighting’s French interface for marketing, communication and relationships, helping connect the company with partners, cave managers and the wider underground community. He brings to that role decades of experience and a very particular way of looking at caves—through the eyes of an explorer, a photographer and a conservationist.

🔦 Because sometimes the best way to work with caves is first to spend a lifetime learning how to look at them.

**Before a lighting project begins, we let the cave speak.** 🕯️

💡 At the earliest stage of a potential project, the Cave Lighting team often carries out an on-site lighting test.

The aim is simple: to help cave managers see what is possible before making any final decisions. 👀

🔦 By testing different luminaires, beam angles, colour temperatures, intensities and positions directly inside the cave, we can explore how each chamber responds to light and identify the solutions best suited to its character.

Sometimes, a static lighting concept is the right choice.

✨ In other spaces, dynamic lighting can guide the visitor’s attention, support the guide’s narrative, and reveal specific points of interest step by step.

🪨 One of the most important parts of this process is rediscovering the cave’s natural nuances.

⛔️ Many older lighting systems illuminated entire spaces with the same warm, orange tone, the same intensity and little variation. As a result, textures, colours and geological details often blended into one uniform image.

🌈 Modern cave lighting makes it possible to work with contrast, depth and carefully selected colour temperatures, bringing out subtle differences in the rock and revealing details that may have remained unnoticed for years.

But good cave lighting is not about showing everything. 🌑

It is about choosing what deserves to be revealed.

🤝 Together with cave managers and guides, we identify the formations, perspectives and details that matter most. Then we decide what to show, how to show it, and when to bring it out of the darkness in the most natural and effective way possible.

Every decision depends on the cave itself: its scale, formations, atmosphere, visitor route, and the story the guide wants to tell.

🛠️ These tests are both creative and technical. They allow cave directors and managers to compare different possibilities, understand how the systems work, and experience the result directly underground.

Because the purpose of lighting is not to overpower the cave.

**It is to reveal its true beauty.** ✨

🤝 Some people discovered caves through their work.

Adrian Kondacs chose to build his life around them.

🧗 Long before becoming Project Manager at Cave Lighting, he was already spending nearly every weekend underground. At just 17 years old, he joined a speleology club in Romania after discovering caves out of pure curiosity. What began as a hobby soon became a lifelong passion.

💡 That passion eventually led him to Valea Cetății Cave in 2010, where he took part in the transformation of the cave into a modern showcave. It was there that he first met Alexander and discovered Cave Lighting.
A few years later, after contributing to several projects with the team, he accepted the opportunity to move to Germany and officially joined the company in 2014.

🌍 Today, Adrian leads Cave Lighting projects across Europe and beyond, turning lighting concepts into reality.
He is currently overseeing the complete relighting of Luray Caverns in Virginia, USA—one of America's most iconic showcaves—a landmark project that reflects both the scale and international reach of Cave Lighting today.

✨ Ask Adrian what keeps him motivated after all these years, and his answer is simple:

"No two caves—and no two projects—are ever the same."

For Adrian, lighting isn't about making a cave brighter.

It's about revealing its beauty while making sure it remains protected for generations to come.

✨️ Dechenhöle, Germany 🇩🇪

✨ Where geology meets the art of illumination.

🌍 Located in Iserlohn, in Germany’s Sauerland region, the Dechenhöhle is considered one of the country’s most beautiful and most visited show caves, welcoming more than 60,000 visitors each year. Discovered by railway workers in 1868, the cave was carved into the limestone by an underground river around one to two million years ago. Today, it reveals an extraordinary variety of stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone formations—some up to 500,000 years old.

💡 The renovation of the cave’s lighting began in 2009 with initial tests and was carried out gradually, section by section.
After several phases, the conversion of the entire cave to modern LED technology was completed in February 2015.

🙌 The new lighting creates greater contrast, highlights the cave’s remarkable geological formations and adds carefully selected touches of color—all while being easier to operate and significantly more energy-efficient.

🔦 More than ten years later, the system continues to reveal the cave’s natural beauty and offer visitors an unforgettable underground experience. ✨

Meet the face behind the Cave Lighting team - The people who brings its unique expertise to life around the world.

🤝 Meet Dan Pitic, a Romanian caver, skilled technician, and valued member of the Cave Lighting team. With no family background in caving, Dan’s passion began as a teenager, fuelled by adventure stories—especially the works of Jules Verne—and a deep curiosity about nature.

🧗 After exploring caves informally with friends, he joined a caving club in 1992 and has never stopped since.
This lifelong journey underground eventually led him to discover Cave Lighting’s systems during projects in Romania around 2012.

💡 Years later, from the very first day of his first Cave Lighting project in Germany, he knew the job was a perfect fit: he enjoyed the work itself, the people, the team spirit, and what he calls “German-quality work”—approaching every detail with precision and always striving for the best possible result.
🌍 His work has since taken him to caves across Europe and the United States.

For Dan, illuminating a cave is much more than installing lamps—it is where technical expertise meets artistic vision.

😎 Curious and eager to learn, he studies every angle and adjustment to understand how light can reveal the unique character of a cave and bring each underground landscape to life.
