A staircase designed to be experienced.
Staircases are rarely considered places to stay. This project changes that completely.

In Hirzel, Switzerland, a unique residential concept transforms the staircase into an architectural centerpiece: instead of surrounding an empty space, the stairs wrap around a softly illuminated cube made from MEVACO perforated metal. The result is a striking interplay of light, structure, and modern elegance.

Inspired by traditional Swiss farmhouses, architects Rolf Gmür and Eugen Antón designed ten contemporary apartment buildings that combine clean architectural lines with high-quality materials. At the heart of the concept is the glowing perforated metal cube — turning the staircase into an immersive spatial experience.

🏗️ Urban development meets customized metal design:
The Frankenberger Höfe in Aachen have transformed a former administrative site into a vibrant residential district with 247 apartments – with MEVACO as part of the architecture.

🔩 Around 800 kg of MEVACO aluminium perforated sheet with customised perforation (thicknness 3.0 mm) were used for French balconies as well as bay and parapet railings. The special perforation pattern was chosen to perfectly combine architectural design, structural requirements, and building regulations.

✨ The key advantage:
The custom perforation pattern allowed architects to realize their original design concept precisely – something that would not have been possible with standard perforation patterns. At the same time, the material provides a modern façade appearance, a particularly smooth surface, and versatile design possibilities.

⚙️ The sheets were manufactured to size by MEVACO, further processed, and integrated into the railing structures before installation.

🏢 Semi-transparent balconies with character:
In a residential complex in Menziken, Switzerland, balcony railings made from MEVACO aluminium perforated sheet LC4x25 U8x35 (2.0 mm), subsequently powder-coated provide a modern and functional solution.

🏫 When technical necessity becomes a design feature:
At the Gymnasium Wolfenbüttel, staircases and learning boxes were clad with MEVACO perforated sheet R5 T8 made of steel (2 mm), subsequently powder-coated. The perforated surfaces act as acoustic absorbers, while also becoming a defining architectural element.

🔊 With a 35% open area and integrated fleece backing, the panels reduce noise levels and create a calmer learning environment. At the same time, the perforated metal offers custom design options and a particularly smooth surface.

✨ Another advantage: thanks to the fine perforation, the material appears significantly lighter and more elegant despite the solid steel construction – ideal for modern educational architecture.

Where the former Rothe Erde tax office once stood, the Frankenberger Höfe now offer 247 modern apartments across around 21,900 m² of living space.

🔩 MEVACO was part of the project:
Around 800 kg of customised aluminium perforated sheet (thickness 3.0 mm) were installed in 145 French balconies as well as bay and parapet railings.

✨ The advantage of the customised perforation:
It enables maximum design flexibility while also meeting structural requirements and building regulations – something that would not have been possible with standard perforation patterns. At the same time, the material provides a particularly smooth surface and versatile design options.

🏗️ An experience of glass, light, and metal:
For Varese Design Week, the Glass Emotion Bridge created a spectacular installation on Piazza Podestà. Visitors reached the glass bridge via a staircase clad with MEVACO expanded metal rhomb 62×20×7.5, creating the thrilling sensation of stepping out into open space.

Its three-dimensional structure creates fascinating light and transparency effects – especially at night, when lighting makes the staircase appear almost weightless. At the same time, expanded metal is highly sustainable, as it is manufactured without material waste.
