Seit mehr als 30 Jahren ist Beth Orton unsere Antenne zum Kosmos, die Poetin der Kräfte, die zu gewaltig sind, um sie auf einen Blick zu erfassen. Als Zeugnis ihrer Kunst ist »The Ground Above“« Ortons bislang direkteste und kompromissloseste Musik: eindringlich, roh, verkörpert und emotional furchtlos, bewegend sich zwischen unbewussten Ausdrucksformen und weitreichender, zeitloser Songkunst. Ihre Stimme, die von geflüsterten Beschwörungen bis hin zu urwüchsigen Klagelauten reicht, trägt Melodien, die an klassische Songbook-Formen erinnern. Auf dem gesamten Album dokumentiert Orton Überleben und Erneuerung, Mutterschaft und Identität, politische Unruhe und die fortwährende Entscheidung zu bleiben – in der Liebe, in der Kunst und in der Welt.
Wie schon bei ihrem kritischen Durchbruch »Weather Alive« aus dem Jahr 2022 hat Orton das Album selbst produziert und ist dabei dem kollektiven Geist der ursprünglichen Live-Aufnahmen treu geblieben, während sie in einem über ein Jahr andauernden Prozess das Album, das wir heute hören, formte und erweiterte. Es gibt wohl kaum ein Projekt, das die Welt der instrumentalen Musik zuletzt so nachhaltig revolutioniert hat wie die Hermanos Gutiérrez. Mit ihrem meditativen Signature-Sound haben sich die Brüder Alejandro und Estevan eine treue weltweite Fangemeinde erspielt. Doch während ihre bisherigen Erfolgsalben uns durch die Canyons des amerikanischen Westens führten, schlägt das Duo mit »Los Ojos del Cóndor« ein faszinierendes neues Kapitel auf.

Originally released in Norway in 2001, with Ninja Tune coming on board to release it internationally the following year, Jaga Jazzist are a true musical one off.
Formed in the mid-Nineties around the nucleus of percussionist Martin Horntveth, his multi-instrumentalist brother Lars (who was 14 at the time), tuba-playing sister Line and an expanding coterie of musicians, they were determined to make a big, joyful sound that knew no boundaries of genre. 'We wanted to have a big, big band, but not one playing big band jazz,' as Lars Horntveth once put it.
Comparisons reached for by the press at the time were as broad - from Talk Talk, Soft Machine, Eric Satie, John Coltrane and Don Cherry to acts like Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Squarepusher and Tortoise. This range summed up the breadth and originality of the group's sound. Combining trumpets, trombone, electric guitar, bass, tuba, two bass clarinets, fender rhodes and vibraphone, and it is the mixture of these instruments with an electronic edge that really made it stand out.
The album is a journey that manages to sound both classic and contemporary and an oasis to anyone interested in music which combines iconoclasm with beauty, melody with avant gardism and, in general, a complete lack of interest in anything other than good music.
