On 18 th June, Andreas Knobloch from Beak Consultants GmbH will present: “DeepBEAT - Deep Exploration in the Erzgebirge Boosted by Advanced Exploration Technologies” at the MiningForum organized by DMT GROUP :

The “DeepBEAT” project is funded by Horizon Europe and coordinated by the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at HZDR. It will advance geochemical methods for the identification of deep-seated mineral deposits, propelling Europe to the forefront of scientific innovation in the field.

The aim of the project is to develop an interdisciplinary, holistic, and sustainable exploration approach that combines deep geochemical knowledge with geology and geophysics. The research and innovation developments have the potential to push the limits of surface geochemical exploration to another level. They comprise a) new insights to ultra-high resolution analytical chemistry; b) increasing sampling strategy efficiency; c) introducing ground-breaking new concepts of dealing with elemental measurement data; d) reducing exploration costs by sample selection; e) testing novel phyto-geochemical media; and f) introducing UAV assisted biogeochemical sampling.

The project consortium consists of eight partners and five associated partners from Germany, Finland, France, Czech Republic, and Canada. Three test sites with different deposit types were chosen to conduct the research: 1) Volcanic massive sulphide mineral system at Saramäki, Finland; 2) Granite-porphyry related Li-Sn-W mineral system at Erzgebirge-Krušné hory area, Germany/Czech Republic; and 3) Alkaline metasomatite REE-Zr-Mo mineral system at Hůrky, Czech Republic.

In PEAT-GENIE, we will develop AI and GenAI-based tools that simulate how different management choices affect peatland hydrology, greenhouse gas fluxes, biodiversity, and land use.

The tools will transform fragmented existing data into actionable insights that support evidence-based decision-making in peatland monitoring, restoration planning, and climate impact assessment.

While peatlands are the focus of the project, our ambition is that the results can be transferred to other ecosystems and land-use challenges, helping stakeholders better understand long-term environmental impacts.

Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) / Geologian tutkimuskeskus (GTK) will coordinate the project. The consortium brings together 20 partners from 10 European countries, combining scientific excellence, technical expertise, and strong stakeholder engagement.

On 9 June 2026, the 5th Workshop of the EU Interreg cooperation project recomine SN-CZ-Plus will take place in Varnsdorf/Warnoćicy under the title “Critical Mineral Raw Materials and the Extraction of Rocks in the Šluknov and Sohland Regions”. At 3:10 PM CEST, Markus Zingelmann from Beak Consultants GmbH, will present "The Natural Stone Cadastre Saxony".

The natural stone industry is an important sector of raw material extraction in Germany. Saxony has a rich and diverse range of raw materials. Regional natural stones hold a important position as construction materials from past epochs. In modern times, however, the use of Saxon natural and decorative stones has increasingly declined, as the origin of the raw material has played only a subordinate role compared with price.

With the Saxon Raw Materials Strategy, first adopted in 2012, the Saxon State Government pursues, among other objectives, the valorisation of regional natural and decorative stones. To this end, the Saxon Mining Authority (Sächsisches Oberbergamt Freiberg) commissioned the development of a Saxon Natural Stone Register. Following conceptual preparatory work by Geokompetenzzentrum Freiberg e.V. (GKZ), the project was implemented primarily by Beak Consultants GmbH. A number of additional subcontractors carried out specialised expert assignments. The Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology (Sächsisches Landesamt für Umwelt, Landwirtschaft und Geologie (LfULG)) was also involved in the project, providing technical support.

The Natural Stone Cadastre, now available as a result of this work, provides a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, extraction and use of natural stones in the Free State of Saxony. It explains which geological and tectonic processes have led to the diversity of natural stones and their deposits in Saxony. Particular emphasis is placed on the re-measurement of the rock-physical properties of the investigated stone types. In addition, the register shows which natural stones have been used for specific purposes in the past and for which applications they can be used today. High-quality photographs present the stone types and document their use as building materials.

CONTENT:
In the first part of the short course, a short review will be provided about the concept of mineral predictive mapping. Following up, different machine learning algorithms are being presented and discussed on how they may be used for mineral predictive mapping.
The second main part of the short course is strongly focusing on the practical hands-on-training for a newly developed open source tool for mineral predictive mapping (MPM) for exploration and assessment of critical raw materials called “EIS_HorizonEU” – Exploration Information System.
The demonstrated software tool is open-source and will be able to run for free on the computer of the participants.
Specific topics of the short course include:
- Short introduction to mineral predictive mapping concepts,
- Review of machine learning algorithms applied to mineral predictive mapping, e.g. neural networks, self-organizing maps, fuzzy logic, random forest,
- Hands-on-training on open source tool “EIS” for mineral systems approach and mineral predictive mapping: “EIS” provides a library of tools for using mineral systems approach and mineral predictive mapping in a combined graphical user interface. It runs under Quantum GIS (QGIS) on Windows systems. Training tutorial starts from installation of EIS Toolkit and EIS Plugin on the computer leading up to the final compilation of a mineral prospectivity map using the EIS Wizard in QuantumGIS,
- Case studies for mineral predictive mapping from Europe and Northern America
- Presentation of on-going new developments in mineral exploration and prospectivity mapping.

We are happy to announce the IAMG 2026 Pre-Conference Short Course "Machine learning tools for mineral systems modelling and mineral predictive mapping" taking place on August 23, 2026, which is organized and will be conducted by Beak Consultants GmbH together with the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) / Geologian tutkimuskeskus.

This short course will provide best practices, new ideas and insights in mineral exploration, especially with regards to application of the newly developed open source tools for mineral systems modelling and mineral predictive mapping.
