Our active beekeeping year 2022 is coming to its end with the last feeding sessions. 🐝

Over the summer our colonies have produced about 70 kg of honey, and now we feed them with sugary water to ensure that they are strong and well-fed before the winter. ❄️❄️

In the next months, we beekeepers will still be busy with checking all the equipment and delivering our delicious honey to you. 🍯🍯

August is almost over and we continue to prepare our beehives for the upcoming winter ❄️❄️

An important step in the process is the varroa treatment. 🩹
The varroa mites attach to the workers bees, feed on their blood (hemolymph fluid), and reproduce in the larvae cells, causing brood malformations and weakening of the whole colony.
To slow their spread we treat our bees with 60% formic acid (a natural component of honey) using the Nassenheider evaporator, which will allow the acid to pe*****te the capped cells and kill the reproducing mites.
Later a second treatment will be carried out to ensure that this pest is kept in control 🐝💛

Today we'd like to introduce you to the youngest nucleus in our apiary 🐝

We created it almost two months ago and, although a bit slowly, the colony is now growing: the queen is laying eggs and the bees are working hard storing pollen and nectar in preparation for the upcoming winter.

We'll make sure to keep you posted with their journey and development 💛

P.s.: Can you spot the queen in the second pic? She has a green dot on her thorax. 🧐

Finally it’s summer!! ☀️☀️☀️ For us beekeepers it’s the main season and there is a loooot to do: We control the colonies if they are swarming, we form new colonies by introducing new queens and and and... Particularly this month our bees also looking for nectar 🌸🍯 Have you already seen some of our bees on the campus? 🙃🐝🌻
