𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆

This year’s Fire Prevention Week, initiated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), puts the spotlight on lithium-ion battery safety under the theme “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

While the campaign highlights the everyday devices we charge at home, lithium-ion battery safety is just as critical on a much larger scale.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS), battery production facilities and recycling plants can contain large quantities of lithium-ion cells. Here, detecting abnormal heat early can provide valuable time to act before an incident escalates.

AP Sensing’s fiber optic Linear Heat Detection (LHD) continuously monitors temperature across large areas and helps

✅ detect abnormal heat at an early stage
✅ precisely locate hotspots along thousands of meters
✅ monitor large and demanding environments continuously

Together with our business partner Ampacimon, we will present new insights into using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Optical Ground Wires (OPGW) for overhead line monitoring.

The paper explores how existing telecom fibers within the OPGW can be used to derive real-time wind information, a key input for dynamic line rating (DLR). Results from a 220 kV transmission line operated by a European TSO are cross-referenced with vibration-based DLR sensor measurements.

Dr. Ralf Albrecht, Business Development Manager at AP Sensing, will attend the event and be available for individual meetings throughout the conference.

Planning to be in Calgary? Connect with Ralf to discuss DAS for overhead line monitoring and DLR.

Can fiber optics and AI help detect threats before they damage power cables?

At the CIGRE Paris Session 2026, our team presented research on AI-based cable threat detection using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS).

The approach combines deep learning and signal processing to identify potentially harmful activities such as excavator digging, jackhammering, drilling, diver and ROV interference in both urban and submarine environments.

Real-world testing demonstrated strong detection performance, highlighting the potential of DAS to enable earlier threat recognition and strengthen critical cable protection. By providing operators with timely, actionable intelligence, the solution supports intervention before damage occurs, reducing the rsik of cable faults, outages, and costly repairs.

Recent suspected sabotage attacks on electrical substations in Germany have once again highlighted the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure.
While investigations continue, one question is becoming increasingly urgent: How can large and often remote substation sites be monitored effectively around the clock?

AP Sensing’s fiber-optic perimeter security solution detects, locates and classifies intrusion attempts in real time.
AI-based analytics help distinguish relevant threats from environmental noise, enabling security teams to respond before intruders reach critical assets.

How can fiber optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) help detect power cable faults in real time?

At the CIGRE Paris Session 2026, Dr. Wissem Sfar Zaoui presented our paper on a 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗩-𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Validated on real HVAC and HVDC cable fault data, the method successfully detected all faults occurring within the effective fiber-optic sensing range, with no false positives across 176 hours of field recordings.

The result: faster, more reliable fault identification and another step toward smarter power cable monitoring.
