🏁 SEPANG | BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX RECAP 🇲🇾

Back where our F1 journey began.

After nine years away, Formula 1 returned to the Sepang International Circuit for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, bringing a special chapter of Tilke’s history back to the F1 calendar.

From heavy rain and changing track conditions to close racing and strategic battles, the weekend delivered plenty of unexpected moments.

With its long straights, demanding corners and wide racing surface, Sepang once again showed the character that makes it such a distinctive circuit.

For us at Tilke, seeing our first F1 circuit back on the calendar and at the centre of a race weekend was a memorable moment.

Where architecture meets racing. 🌺

Sepang’s iconic 600-metre-long main grandstand is defined by its flowing membrane roofs, inspired by natural forms and the veining of leaves.

At its centre, the fan-shaped roof evokes the hibiscus, Malaysia’s national flower, giving the architecture a distinctive local identity.

A landmark of Tilke’s architectural design since 1999. And now, as racing returns to Sepang, we’re looking forward to seeing this iconic venue come alive once again.

A Look Back at Sepang International Circuit, 1999 🇲🇾

These images take us back to the final days before Sepang hosted its first-ever Formula 1 race, a defining moment for the circuit and a major milestone in Tilke’s history as our first Formula 1 circuit.

From its distinctive layout to its iconic architecture, Sepang was designed to create a unique experience for both drivers and spectators. More than 25 years later, the character of the circuit is still unmistakable.

And now, in 2026, Formula 1 is returning to Sepang as the Bahrain Grand Prix. Seeing the circuit back on the F1 calendar and coming alive once again makes this a particularly special moment for us at Tilke.

From our first F1 circuit to its return to the world stage, Sepang remains an important part of our journey.

After nine years away, the Sepang International Circuit returns to the Formula 1 calendar in 2026.

Opened in 1999, Sepang marked a major milestone in the history of Tilke Engineers & Architects. It was Hermann Tilke’s first Formula 1 circuit designed completely from the ground up, including the track layout, grandstands and the overall circuit infrastructure. This landmark project laid the foundation for many iconic race tracks that followed.

Designed for exciting racing and unforgettable moments, Sepang remains a landmark of modern circuit design more than 25 years after its opening.

We are proud to see this iconic circuit return to the global motorsport stage.

🏁 Another exciting Formula 1 weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has come to an end.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya remains one of the most demanding venues on the Formula 1 calendar, renowned for its high requirements in aerodynamics, vehicle balance, and tyre management. For decades, it has served as a benchmark circuit for drivers, teams, and engineers alike.

At Tilke, we have been involved in the circuit’s development since 2002, contributing to various construction and modernization projects over the years, including modifications to the track layout and the development of the main grandstand.

This year’s race once again delivered plenty of action and memorable moments. Congratulations to on securing his first Formula 1 victory with Scuderia Ferrari.

A Look Back at the 2002 Grandstand Project

Great racetrack architecture is more than a structure – it is about creating an experience for spectators while meeting the technical and operational demands of world-class motorsport.

In 2002, Tilke Engineers & Architects was involved in the development of the new main grandstand at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Designed to provide excellent sightlines, efficient spectator flow, and seamless integration into the circuit infrastructure, the grandstand became an important milestone in the venue’s evolution.

More than two decades later, the grandstand continues to demonstrate the value of thoughtful design. Its clear architectural language, functionality, and adaptability have allowed it to remain relevant and fit for purpose in a constantly evolving motorsport environment.

From concept to completion, the goal was to create a structure that would serve fans, organizers, and the circuit alike—not only for the next race weekend, but for many years to come.

As Formula 1 returns to Barcelona this weekend, we look back at a project that continues to shape the spectator experience today.

Did you know that we have been involved in construction work on the track since 2002. Back then, some changes were made to the layout of the track an a new Grandstand was built for the main straight.
