More impressions on our exhibition in Prague. The 2.0 version of RECONFIXX robot from 2017 was revealed in anatomical form. It is the only prototype that used soft body integrated with wave spring and pneumatic cushion.

On 20th August, the Experimental Architecture Biennial 2021 in Prague has successfully ended.

How many reconfigurations can possibly be achieved by a chain consisting of 8 modules?

The answer is 128! Under the condition when they are connected by a simple “hinge” on the interface between neighbouring modules.

RECONFIXX’s future investigations will include chain architecture, which significantly reduces the complexity in requirements of shareable actuators. Due to constantly connected modules, the system is less dependent on unpredictable environmental conditions. The entire assembly is guided through fixed points which can be better controlled.

Advantage of chain system relies on combination of discrete and continuous geometry. In such a system, discrete modules are permanently connected into continuous chain. This allows to implement continuous technologies within discrete parts.

Stadium will be reconfixxed.

RECONFIXX’s robotic system (originally called “MoleMOD”) is developed as an alternative to state-of-the-art self-reconfigurable systems with focus on building industry. This system is based on passive discrete elements using low-cost shareable robots self-assembling into 2D/3D structures.

Through physical functional prototypes the concept has been proofed. In parallel digital control systems are developing. Now, system prototypes are being further adopted into use cases, namely hybrid configurations of interior spaces or structures (façade, support system etc.) for diverse functional purposes.

We are exhibiting at EAB Prague!

RECONFIXX’s concept was originally developed from Jan Petrš’s dissertation “MoleMOD / Self-reconfigurable System with Shareable Actuators” under studio FLO│W at Fakulta architektury ČVUT v Praze. This is now exhibiting at the 5th Biennale for Experimental Architecture, together with Liquifer Systems Group and Robotic Building, from TU Delft.

Experimental Architecture Biennial is a unique platform focused on presenting the latest inspirational ideas illustrating the shifts and transformations of the architectural space perception.

RECONFIXX visions a new model for adaptive architecture, where individual modules will be owned or leased as material assets by end-users, while the shared robot and its performance will be provided in the form of technology services.

Currently, system prototypes developed by RECONFIXX are being further adopted into use cases, on both digital and physical level. Our goal is to significantly reduce the high prices and complexity of state-of-the-art solutions, aiming to make diversified structures and spaces more accessible and affordable for an ever-changing world.

RECONFIXX's concept unfold the future of architecture that requires higher and faster adaptivity, using reusable and relocatable modules that can self-assembly into desired spatial configurations. Leveraging the automation and intelligence technologies developed from the PhD dissertation (2020) by Jan Petrš, RECONFIXX delivers modular reconfigurable robotics solution that anticipates the potential impacts of adaptive architecture and its life-cycle management.
