Whatโs Hiding Inside Your Scuba Cylinders?
It is easy to look at a scuba cylinder from the outside and assume everything is fine. The real story can be very different once you look inside.
Moisture can enter a cylinder through the breathing-air filling system. One possible cause is a compressor filtration system that has become saturated and is no longer effectively removing moisture. Poor maintenance, overdue filter changes, unsuitable operating conditions, or another compressor fault can all contribute to excess moisture reaching the cylinder.
Once water is inside a steel cylinder, corrosion can begin. Over time, this can lead to rust, pitting and loss of material. For cylinders being filled with Nitrox or other higher-oxygen-content gases, the condition of the cylinder and the control of contamination become even more important.
This is why proper visual inspection matters.
A trained technician needs to know what to look for, how to assess corrosion and damage, how to use the correct inspection equipment, and how to make a professional decision based on the applicable requirements and standards.
