You know your waterjet cuts metal, stone, and composites. But do you know how much garnet it actually uses — and what that really costs?

Typical consumption: 0.3–1.0 kg per minute. That’s 18–60 kg per hour.

But the real question isn’t “how much garnet?” It’s “what does it cost per meter of cutting?”

A cheaper price per ton often hides a higher cost per meter — if the garnet cuts slower, clogs your nozzle, or causes rework.

Here’s a quick reality check:

0.5 kg/min @ USD 0.35/kg → about USD 10.5 per hour

At 6 m/hour cutting speed → that’s ~USD 1.75 per meter

What affects consumption and cost?

1. Nozzle & mixing tube size
2. Pump pressure
3. Material thickness & cutting speed
4. Garnet mesh (80 mesh is standard)
5. Garnet quality – consistent sizing, low dust, low moisture, stable flow

Poor garnet causes unstable flow, clogging, slower cutting, faster nozzle wear — and higher cost per meter.

Your base material

Rust level & profile required

Open nozzle vs. closed‑loop recycling

Safety & environmental rules

Here’s a quick breakdown:

Glass Beads – Spherical, gentle. Best for stainless steel, aluminum, molds, decorative finishes. Not for heavy rust or coating profiles.

Garnet – Angular, low dust, no free silica. The balanced choice for open‑nozzle blasting on ships, tanks, pipelines. Best overall for coating prep.

Aluminum Oxide – Hardest, fastest cutting. Great for thick mill scale and hardened steel. But more dust, faster nozzle wear. Choose when speed outweighs finish.

Steel Grit – Tough, recyclable (dozens of cycles). Ideal for blast rooms and automated wheel blasting. Avoid where iron contamination is a problem.

Hardness numbers alone don’t tell the full story. On the job site, what really matters is breakdown rate, media life, surface finish, and equipment wear.

Here’s how the three common types compare:

▸ GP (tempered, 42–52 HRC) – Breaks down slowly, edges round off gradually. Longest life, lowest consumption. Ideal for general rust removal, thin parts, high‑volume production.

▸ GL (tempered, 56–60 HRC) – Sits between GP and GH. Cuts faster than GP, lasts longer than GH. Many foundries switch to GL to reduce media consumption and equipment wear.

▸ GH (non‑tempered, 60–66 HRC) – Fastest cutting. One pass often does what GP needs two or three. Trade‑off: faster breakdown, more dust, higher nozzle wear. Best for heavy scale, tight deadlines.

How to tell if you’ve chosen wrong?

Aluminum oxide (Mohs 9) cuts aggressively. But on thin steel or stainless, it can create a profile deeper than necessary — leading to rework or rejected parts.

Garnet (Mohs 7.5–8) is less aggressive, easier to control. It breaks down gradually, keeps dust levels stable, and leaves a consistent profile.
