Evaluating High-Precision Gears? Look Beyond the Drawing.
If you’re sourcing custom high-precision gears, the drawing is only part of the story.
The real question is whether a supplier can hold the required tolerances at the size and volume you need — and provide evidence that the finished parts consistently meet those requirements.
At New Yinye, we often receive drawings for large helical gears, precision gear shafts, ring gears, or other custom gears manufactured to customer drawings. A specification may call for DIN 5 or AGMA Quality 12, but machining the tooth form is only one part of achieving that result.
Material condition, heat treatment, distortion control, tooth profile, lead, pitch, surface finish and final inspection all influence whether the requirement can be maintained through production.
So how should buyers evaluate a potential supplier before committing to a project?
In our experience, three checkpoints matter.
1. Manufacturing capability that matches the part
For large or complex high-precision gears, the machining envelope matters.
New Yinye operates a manufacturing facility of approximately 25,000 m² in Wuxi, China, with capabilities including CNC gear cutting, precision gear grinding, five-axis machining, turn-mill machining and precision finishing.
On applicable gear-grinding equipment, the maximum grinding diameter is approximately 2,500 mm, with module capability up to approximately 45 mm.
At the same time, smaller parts can also be evaluated when the project involves higher precision, complex geometry or demanding technical requirements.
2. Quality systems backed by inspection evidence
Precision claims should be measurable.
New Yinye is certified to ISO 9001:2015, and our inspection capabilities cover gear geometry, dimensional accuracy, material verification, hardness, mechanical properties, non-destructive testing and other project-specific checks.
Our stable precision capability includes:
GB Grade 4 / ISO Grade 4 / DIN Grade 5 / AGMA Quality 12
Selected products can reach DIN Grade 4, subject to gear type, size, material, heat treatment, geometry and technical review.
3. Long-term batch performance
Producing one good sample is important.
Maintaining the same quality across hundreds or thousands of parts is harder.
New Yinye has supplied more than 10,000 gears for wind turbine main gearbox applications over more than five years of continuous cooperation, with stable batch performance during that period.
For another European customer, approximately 2,000 custom gears for furnace-top gearboxes in steelmaking equipment have been supplied over more than ten years, together with customer recognition for quality and supplier performance.
These references matter because they show more than dimensional capability. They show whether process control can be sustained over time.
When evaluating a high-precision gear supplier, compare the evidence behind the claims:
- Manufacturing capability
- Inspection records
- Quality systems
- Process control
- Long-term batch performance
A drawing defines the requirement.
The supplier’s process and verification system determine whether that requirement can be repeated in production.
