Runs, orange peel, fisheyes. The gun usually gets blamed. It's the air.
Spray painting puts three demands on a compressor — and most buyers consider only the first:
1. Volume. Every gun has a rated consumption. Size for the sum of the guns running at once, plus margin. Undersized volume shows up the moment a second painter starts: the spray pattern changes, and the film thickness follows.
2. Stability. The gun needs its pressure at the gun, through the hose, while other tools are running. A machine that cycles or pulses produces air that varies — and the finish varies with it.
3. Quality. This one ruins the most paint. Water and oil reach the wet film and leave defects that only appear after the paint has flashed off. By then the panel is finished.
Here's the sizing step most people get wrong: published compressor capacities are stated at a specific pressure. Run the machine at a higher pressure and it delivers less air — and paint shops usually run higher than the quoted figure. That's where undersized systems are born.
On pressure: what the compressor puts out is not what the gun receives. Hoses, fittings, filters and distance all take their cut. Set above the gun's requirement to cover those losses, then verify at the gun with a gauge — don't assume. If you keep raising the compressor setting to make the gun behave, there's a restriction somewhere between the machine and your hand.
Five mistakes that cost paint:
• Sizing on average demand instead of the busiest moment
• Leaving the dryer and filters out of the quote — that cost comes back as rework, not as a line item
• Setting pressure by feel, without measuring at the gun
• A long, thin hose on a system sized for the machine rather than for the gun
• No storage — then wondering why the pressure at the gun keeps moving
Treatment order matters as much as the equipment: receiver, then dryer, then filters, with drains actually connected.
Tell us your gun model, how many will run at once, and how sensitive your finish is — we'll come back with the machine size and the treatment chain that matches.
