6-Layer HDI PCB Stack-up: Which One Is Right for Your Design?
Not all 6-layer HDI boards are created equal. The stack-up structure you choose directly impacts performance, manufacturability, and cost.
We break down the 4 mainstream options:
🔹 Simplified 1-Step HDI (1+4+1) – Single lamination, no buried vias. Lowest cost, high yield. Ideal for cost-sensitive consumer electronics.
🔹 Standard 1-Step HDI (1+4+1 with buried vias) – Double lamination. Supports higher wiring density with stable signal integrity. A mature choice for mid-to-high-end devices.
🔹 Non-Standard 2-Step HDI (1+1+2+1+1) – Cross-layer blind vias (1-3 layer). Extremely complex processing, high cost, low yield. Only for mandatory cross-layer requirements — avoid if possible.
🔹 Any-layer HDI – Ultimate routing freedom and signal integrity. The premium choice for high-frequency, high-speed applications.
Our take: Whenever design rules permit, shifting from standard 1-step (with buried vias) to the simplified single-lamination version can deliver significant cost savings with minimal performance trade-off.
The bottom line? Stack-up selection is a three-way balancing act — performance, manufacturability, and cost. Get it right, and you gain a competitive edge. Get it wrong, and you pay for it in yield, delivery delays, and performance gaps.
