Only Know C18?
C18 is one of the most commonly used HPLC columns. But is it the right choice for every separation?
Different compounds require different separation mechanisms. Here are 6 types of HPLC columns you should know:
1. C18 Column
A common reversed-phase column for a wide range of compounds.
2. C8 Column
A less hydrophobic reversed-phase column, often providing faster elution than C18.
3. HILIC Column
Suitable for highly polar compounds that are difficult to retain on reversed-phase columns.
4. Normal-Phase Column
Separates compounds mainly based on differences in polarity.
5. Ion-Exchange Column
Separates charged compounds through interactions with charged groups.
6. Affinity Column
Uses specific molecular interactions to selectively retain target compounds.
Choosing the right column starts with understanding how each one separates compounds.
