A steering wheel may look simple, but behind it are multiple precision manufacturing and welding processes.
For automotive steering wheel frames, weld quality is an important part of production quality control. So how can manufacturers quickly screen welded areas for potential defects?
In this test, we used eddy current testing (ECT) to inspect the steering wheel frame. The inspection showed no obvious defect indications in the tested weld areas. We then used a standard weld reference block to further demonstrate the instrument’s response to known discontinuities.
Because eddy current testing is sensitive to surface and near-surface defects in conductive materials, it can support inspection of steering wheel frames, automotive seat structures, body components, and other welded metal parts.
Efficient NDT helps manufacturers identify potential quality issues earlier and improve process control.
