USM takes its initials from its founder, Ulrich Schärer, and Münsingen, the Swiss village just outside of Bern where he was born. Swiss manufacturing is synonymous with precision, quality and dependability. These values are embedded in USM modular furniture’s DNA.

The Haller system, made up of sheet metal and steel tubes connected by unique connecting ball, has offered endless possibilities for installations for more than 50 years.

Designed by architect Fritz Haller, Haller remains just as timelessly stylish, trailblazing, and unique as it was the day it was first created. It’s an icon of modernist design and art – it’s been a part of the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection in New York since 2001.

USM's designs show a commitment to unparalleled innovation, genuine quality, and true style. Plus, their work to lower the environmental impact of our products has been awarded with prestigious Greenguard certification for low chemical and particle emissions.

To start your own USM design with a configurator, click here; or contact us and a design associate will be happy to assist you! Haute Living is proud to represent these icons of Swiss design as USM dealers for Chicago, New York, and beyond.

USM, founded in 1885, has always been about sustainability, adaptability and design excellence. Their modular furniture, incorporating separate pieces used together in a design, offers aesthetics, functionality and flexibility for the office, home or other bespoke spaces. Their tables, shelving and storage solutions are made to last, and pieces created fifty years ago pair with those purchased today.

Originally a family-run metal factory, Paul Schärer Jr., grandson of the founder and father of the current leader, steered USM into the modern world in the early 1960s. He commissioned the Swiss architect Fritz Haller, one of the most influential Swiss architects of the 20th century, to design a new type of flexible building that could accommodate the company’s administration and adapt to various manufacturing processes. Paul Schärer Jr. and Fritz Haller developed the USM Haller fitting system, which has since become an international benchmark for furniture.

USM takes its initials from its founder, Ulrich Schärer, and Münsingen, the Swiss village outside Bern where he was born. Since its creation in 1885 and without interruption, the company USM has stayed rooted in Münsingen, Switzerland. They are GreenGuard Certified, manufactured with minimal environmental impact, and Cradle to Cradle Certified for developing up-cyclable products.

Roquebrune Chair
Eileen Gray, 1927
leather
For the terrace of her second house in Castellar Eileen Gray designed a very comfortable chair with a deep seating area. It was covered with blue canvas. She created another version, this one for interior use, that was identical in the lines but was finished instead in leather. And thus Roquebrune, another design classic from the 30s, was born.

Customizable Non Conformist Chair by Eileen Gray

It piques and provokes what one might expect of it, and yet it is inexplicably aesthetic and harmonious, a nonconformist on velvet paws. Eileen Gray commented quite pragmatically on her work with typical understatement, "An armrest was omitted in order to leave the body more freedom in movement and to allow it to bend forward or to turn to the other side unrestricted." Seldom was a nonconformist more ready to talk.

Customizable Daybed by Eileen Gray

The daybed is rightly counted among Eileen Gray’s most famous designs. The lounge "offers pleasant and comfortable seating and is, moreover, particularly suited to relaxing." What she in her own modesty conceals is the fact that the baybed is enchantingly beautiful, accessible from all sides and a pleasing sight from every perspective. It is the ideal showpiece to be placed freely in a spacious room.

When an avant-garde steel tube design meets the classical refectory table, the result is the double X. A large, yet elegant table, its X-shaped supports make for optimum rigidity. Like so many of Eileen Gray‘s designs, the double X is a master of many roles, cutting a fine figure both as a dining room table and as a desk or office table for individualists.

Customizable Bonaparte Lounge Chair by Eileen Gray

Bonaparte is one of the seldom cases in which the luxurious comfort of an upholstered chair has been successfully united with a tubular steel construction. The result communicates both ease and convenience. Actually conceived as a piece for drawing rooms, Eileen Gray found Bonaparte so pleasant that she used it for decades as her desk chair in her Paris home at Rue Bonaparte.

Customizable Bibendum Lounge Chair by Eileen Gray

Bibendum is one of a kind. Nowhere in the history of design will one find an armchair that compares to this. It is captivatingly harmonious despite its size and unites a majestic impressiveness with charm and esprit like no other leather armchair. Eileen Gray underscored the character of her endearing parior lion with sly irony; she named it after the Michelin man, whose form this armchair calls to mind.

Born in 1878, the designer Eileen Gray was one of the five children of a rich Irish family. Between 1898 and 1902 Eileen Gray attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London and also worked at a furniture-making workshop, where she became acquainted with Asian lacquers, which would start her on her life's work. In 1900 Eileen Gray first went to Paris; between 1902 and 1905 she attended courses at the école Colarossi and the Académie Julian. In 1907 Eileen Gray moved to Paris and 21 rue Bonaparte, a flat she would live in for the rest of her life.
From the Japanese artisan Seizo Sougawara, Eileen Gray learned Japanese lacquer techniques. Around 1910 Eileen Gray started making lacquered folding screens. In 1913 she first showed work at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, where she attracted the notice of the couturier and art collector Jacques Doucet, who became Eileen Gray's first major client.
In 1919 Eileen Gray was commissioned to design the entire interior of the rue de Lota flat of Madame Mathieu Lévy. In 1922 Eileen Gray opened Galerie Jean Désert, where she sold her lacquer tables and screens. In the 1920s, Eileen Gray came into contact with the Dutch avant-garde group De Stijl and their abstract geometric works. At the same time, she was made acquaianted with contemporary modern architecture through the French architect Jean Badovici.
Eileen Gray's own work was strongly influenced by contemporary architecture and she began to design stringently functional furniture. From 1926 until 1929 Eileen Gray and Badovici designed their own house in Roquebrune: E-1027. For that house, Eileen Gray designed some very modern furniture, including the celebrated "E-1027" side table with a circular glass top and tubular steel frame. In 1930-31 Eileen Gray designed the furniture for Jean Badovici's flat. In 1934 their house, "Tempe e Pailla", was built in Castellar. In 1937 Eileen Gray exhibited her work in Le Corbusier's "Pavillon des Temps Nouveau". After that little more was heard about Eileen Gray; her work was not discovered until around 1970. Some of the furniture she designed has been reissued by Classicon.
