What is the minimum order quantity for CNC machining?

The answer is often more flexible than buyers expect.

CNC machining can support everything from **1 prototype to low-volume and production quantities** — but MOQ and unit price are not the same thing.

In our latest guide, we explain:

• Why 1-piece CNC orders can be expensive
• MOQ vs. economic order quantity
• Typical prototype and production quantities
• Why unit price drops as volume increases
• What quantities buyers should request in an RFQ

Why can two CNC parts of similar size have very different prices?

Machining cost is influenced by much more than material and part size.

Key factors include:

• Part geometry and complexity
• Deep pockets and thin walls
• Tight tolerances
• Surface finish requirements
• Number of setups
• Material removal and tool access
• Order quantity and secondary operations

We’ve put together a practical guide for engineers and product designers on what really affects CNC machining pricing — and where design changes can help reduce unnecessary cost.

Choosing the right anodizing finish is about more than just color.

For CNC-machined aluminum parts, **Type II and Type III anodizing** offer different levels of corrosion resistance, hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional impact.

In our latest guide, we cover:

• Type II vs. Type III anodizing
• Common anodizing colors
• 6061 vs. 7075 anodizing appearance
• Corrosion and wear resistance
• How anodizing can affect tight tolerances and fits

A small tool, but a useful one for everyday CNC work.
We recently added a free Thread & Tap Drill Calculator to the CNCTAL CNC Knowledge Hub.
It helps quickly check recommended tap drill sizes for:
• Metric threads
• UNC threads
• UNF threads
• Different thread engagement percentages
For example, for an M8 × 1.25 internal thread, the calculator gives the recommended drill diameter and nearest standard drill size.
Of course, the final tap drill size still depends on material, tap geometry, thread tolerance, coating, lubrication, and the tooling manufacturer’s recommendation.
But for engineers, machinists, designers, and anyone reviewing CNC drawings, it can be a very handy reference.

You can try it here:

We are also building more practical CNC engineering tools for the CNCTAL Knowledge Hub.

Robot reducer housings demand precision — there’s no room for “close enough.”

Anyone working in robotics knows how critical the housing tolerances are.

If the bearing seats, center distances, or mating features are out of tolerance, the gears won’t mesh properly — and that’s when you start hearing the unwanted clicking and rattling.

At CNCTAL, we focus on precision machining for robot reducer housings and other critical robotic components, where dimensional consistency directly affects motion, noise, and service life.
