What are the differences between EFT and surge test?

The EFT (Electrical Fast Transient) and Surge tests are both critical components of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, but they simulate different types of electrical disturbances and serve distinct purposes. Below is a detailed comparison:
1. Definition and Purpose
EFT Test
Purpose: Simulates fast, repetitive voltage transients caused by inductive load switching (e.g., relays, motors, or contactors). These transients are short-duration, high-frequency bursts that can disrupt digital circuits or cause data corruption.
Standard: Governed by IEC 61000-4-4, which defines pulse characteristics (e.g., 5 ns rise time, 50 ns duration) and repetition rates (e.g., 5 kHz or 100 kHz).
Typical Sources: Switching of inductive loads, relay contact bounce, or electrostatic discharge
Surge Test
Purpose: Evaluates immunity against high-energy, single-event transients such as lightning strikes, power grid switching, or faults. Surges are slower but far more destructive, capable of damaging insulation or semiconductor devices38.
Standard: Follows IEC 61000-4-5, which specifies waveforms like the 1.2/50 μs voltage surge (rising to peak in 1.2 μs, decaying in 50 μs) and 8/20 μs current surge610.

EFT Test

Surge Test
Pulse Application: Single or multiple high-voltage surges (e.g., 0.5–4 kV for industrial devices) injected into power/signal ports.
Immunity Focus: Validates robustness against catastrophic events like lightning strikes.
Mitigation: Requires robust protection (e.g., gas discharge tubes, MOVs, TVS diodes with high energy absorption)
