Chilean 12 bolt Diving Helmet Tauchen Scaphandre Polombari
An original hand-formed 12 bolt diving helmet made in Chile. The bonnet is brazed in two sections with the seam running across the crown of the bonnet from front to back which is a unique and identifying feature to these helmets. The air channels are still attached inside the bonnet but the final ducting on the right side channel is missing as seen in the interior photo. The exhaust head button, spring, and control all still function and the non-return valve is still attached to the inlet elbow. All the port glasses are intact and not cracked or broken. It has all four straps and the 12 breastplate nuts, and the bonnet and breastplate separate easily. The pictures tell the story. This is an authentic diving helmet. NOT a reproduction. This helmet came out of Chile as part of a huge buy that Leon Lyons made several decades ago. The number “39” is hand written on the back of the bonnet and breastplate to ensure that the helmet remained matched during shipping. The “39” has faded on the breastplate. There are a few of these helmets around in collections but not all are as complete or in as good condition as this one.
Edited from Diving Heritage: The Republic of Chile in South America is a long narrow country bordered on one side by the Andes and on the other side by the Pacific ocean. It has over 4600 kilometers of coastline and has a very varied and interesting variety of landscapes. It is also the longest North-South country in the world and its islands, including Easter Islands some of the Polynesian Islands and Robinson Crusoe Island reach far into the Pacific Ocean. These Islands extend Chile's claim to territorial waters over a huge area. It is not surprising therefore that the Chileans were prolific helmet builders and divers and the abalone divers from Chile used the copper helmet technology right up to the 1980s when over fishing all but closed the industry down. There are many different designs found but one thing in common was that the helmet's rugged construction survived the harsh and continual use the helmets had to withstand. It has been said there are no two helmets alike but certain similarities can be found. They were nearly always three light and four light examples are rare. We have not seen a Chilean helmet with a communications facility though they may exist. The side windows were often oval. The fittings were often heavily soldered onto the bonnets. The helmets appear utilitarian but their simple design and rugged beauty has made them collectable all around the world.

Un original casco de buceo hecho a mano de 12 pernos fabricado en Chile. El capó está soldado en dos secciones con la costura corriendo a través de la corona del capó de adelante hacia atrás que es una característica única e identificadora de estos cascos. Los canales de aire todavía están conectados dentro del capó, pero el conducto final en el canal del lado derecho falta como se ve en la foto interior. El botón del cabezal de escape, el resorte y el control siguen funcionando y la válvula de retención todavía está unida al codo de entrada. Todos los vidrios del puerto están intactos y no agrietados o rotos. Tiene las cuatro correas y las 12 nueces de la pectoral, y el capó y la pectoral se separan fácilmente. Las imágenes cuentan la historia. Este es un auténtico casco de buceo. NO una reproducción. Este casco salió de Chile como parte de una gran compra que Leon Lyons hizo hace varias décadas. El número "39" está escrito a mano en la parte posterior del capó y el peto para asegurar que el casco permaneció igualado durante el envío. El "39" se ha desvanecido en el pectoral. Hay algunos de estos cascos en las colecciones, pero no todos son tan completos o en buenas condiciones como éste.

No hemos visto un casco chileno con una facilidad de comunicaciones aunque puedan existir. Las ventanas laterales eran a menudo ovaladas. Las guarniciones fueron a menudo pesadamente soldadas en los capos. Los cascos parecen utilitarios, pero su diseño simple y robusta belleza los ha hecho coleccionables en todo el mundo.
