Agricultural machinery is one of the toughest environments for power electronics.
We are currently supporting an agricultural machinery manufacturer with the development of a rugged power supply directly on a plough.
The system starts with the tractor’s 12 V electrical system and supplies a 48 V DC bus on the implement. Along the way, we also have to deal with short power peaks of up to 1.2 kW, an external energy buffer, CC/CV charging and harsh environmental conditions.
And one lesson from the project stands out:
Fertiliser attacks almost everything.
That is why selecting a DC/DC converter for agricultural machinery is about much more than input and output voltage.
It is about the complete system:
→ supply voltage and cabling
→ continuous and peak power
→ voltage drop and high input currents
→ temperature
→ shock and vibration
→ dirt, water and aggressive environments
→ energy storage and load behaviour
