But like any high‑accuracy equipment, it only stays that way if it is maintained consistently and at the right intervals.

W-axis – Automation for varying workpiece lengths

The W-axis automates the positioning of the tailstock and, depending on the configuration, the in-process measuring head, making it easier to machine part families with varying workpiece lengths. Programmed, precise positioning eliminates manual setup work and supports repeatable grinding processes.

The tailstock position is stored in the grinding program and automatically adapts to the workpiece length. This significantly reduces changeover times and increases flexibility, even for smaller lot sizes and changing production requirements. Repeat orders can be reproduced reliably, while part changes can be carried out with minimal operator intervention.

With the Fritz Studer Award 2026, we support graduates whose work contributes to innovation in areas such as machine tool concepts, alternative materials, simulation models, sensor technology, digital solutions, and manufacturing technologies.

The internationally recognized research award is endowed with CHF 10,000 and is open to graduates from European universities and institutes of technology.
