Automated In-Process Measurement at Multiple Grinding Zones for Part Families

The R‑axis is an additional longitudinal axis which enables automated in‑process measurement across multiple grinding positions, using a single measuring head.

Instead of manually repositioning the measuring equipment, the measuring head moves automatically along the workpiece. This allows different diameters or sections to be measured within one setup.

What this means in practice
▪️ No manual adjustment of measuring heads between operations
▪️ One measuring system for multiple positions on the workpiece
▪️ Significantly reduced setup and changeover time
▪️ Higher flexibility when switching between different parts

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘂𝗯

One of our highlight at GrindingHub is the integrated W‑ and R‑axis, which enable a high level of automation for workpiece families. In the video, you can see how the system automatically adjusts to different workpiece lengths. The R‑axis moves the W‑carriage to position the tailstock and, together with the R‑mounted measuring head, enables flexible in‑process measurement along the workpiece. This allows one measuring head to cover multiple diameters, makes optimal use of the available center distance, and reduces setup effort while ensuring repeatable precision.
