Buss AG

Buss AG Designed from the process. Built for results. You know us as BUSS AG. The decisive last step in a continuous process chain. Excellence in Process Technologies.

BUSSLIST Group combines three process technologies covering the most demanding stages of material processing —from high-viscosity reactions & temperature-sensitive compounding to precise solidification. From April 10, 2026, this is the home of BUSSLIST Group – and the place to follow everything we do next. BUSSLIST Group unites three specialized process technology companies under one name: LIST Te

chnology AG, BUSS AG and BBA Innova AG. Together, we cover some of the most demanding steps in process engineering – from high-viscosity reactions to temperature-sensitive compounding to cooling and solidification.

◼️ LIST KneaderReactor Technology – since 1966, enabling continuous high-viscosity processing, reactions, devolatilization, drying, crystallization, desublimation and dissolving. Where other technologies reach their limits, the LIST KneaderReactor Technology delivers.

◼️ BUSS Co-Kneader Technology – the original since 1945, compounding continuous highly-filled, temperature- or shear-sensitive materials with a precision that twin-screw extruders cannot match. More than 3,500 systems installed worldwide.

◼️ BBA Cooling Technology – more than 40 years of experience in precise cooling, solidifying and flaking of viscous materials. What unites us: decades of deep process knowledge, built through thousands of realized applications across the chemical, polymer, fiber, food, pharma and life science industries. BUSSLIST Group is part of the Process Solutions division of Jakob Müller Holding AG, a Swiss family-owned industrial group in its fifth generation. Headquartered in Arisdorf, Switzerland and with locations in the USA, Japan, South Korea and China, and installations on every continent.

It protects bridges, appliances, and aircraft components – without a single drop of solvent. The raw materials start as a dry blend of solid components and must melt and mixed in a viscose phase before become a uniform solid after compounding and cooling before they can do their job. Two process steps decide the outcome – and they have to work together.

First, the BUSS PCS Co-Kneader compounds the formulation: resins, hardeners, pigments, fillers, additives. The challenge lies in achieving the precise shear rate for each specific product while ensuring sufficient dispersion but always preventing pre-reactions. Too much energy input, and crosslinking begins before the powder leaves the line.

Later, the BBA Coolers like the BBA Drum Cooler Type CCC take over. The hot, still-reactive melt is rolled into a thin film, pressed against a cooled drum, and broken into flakes within seconds. Fast enough to freeze the chemistry exactly where it should stop. Precise enough to get a consistent and reliable particle size. Compact enough to sit downstream in many production lines.

Get the process wrong, and the hardener is partially consumed before application – leading to defects in the final coating. Get it right, and the coating lasts decades on the surface that needs it.

Over 80 years ago, Heinz List invented a compounding principle that still defines the BUSS Co-Kneader today: a rotating screw shaft with axial oscillation. Engineered for highly filled, shear-sensitive, and temperature-critical compounds where process control matters most.

This principle is still at the heart of every BUSS Co-Kneader today. Over 3,500 installed systems and more than 1,400 customers worldwide. Compounding materials wherever formulations are highly filled, shear-sensitive, or temperature-critical.

The original Co-Kneader Technology. Specialized in demanding materials since 1945.

Excellence means different things to different manufacturers. For many, it means delivering what was specified — on time, on budget, within tolerances. And that matters.

For us, excellence also means solving challenges that specifications alone cannot address.

When the question is not whether a machine meets a standard, but whether it can extend what's technically possible. For materials that challenge established processes. For applications and customers that require more than standard solutions can deliver.

That's what "Excellence in Process Technologies" means to us: not only meeting benchmarks — but advancing them.

Most machine manufacturers start with the machine. Size, throughput, configuration. The process has to fit around what's available.

We start with the process. We understand the material, the procedure, the constraints – and engineer the machine as a consequence. From lab trials to industrial production.

That's what makes a process machine: not equipment that runs a process step, but technology shaped by the process it needs to master. Reliable where proven operations must run. Pioneering where the industry needs what didn't exist before.

Three process technologies. One way of thinking.

A lab result is a proof of concept. It shows what is possible under controlled conditions, with skilled hands, with time on your side.

But scale changes everything. Viscosity behaves differently. Heat distribution shifts. What was manageable in a small batch can become critical when moving to continuous, industrial production.

Most scale-up failures are not chemistry problems. They are process problems — specifically, the challenge of designing a process that survives the transition from lab batch to continuous operation.

Understanding a process means knowing what happens in the lab. Mastering it means anticipating what happens next — in real production, at real scale, and under continuous conditions.

Hot melts don't cool the same way. Some stick. Some crust. Some crack where they shouldn't. The difference between a clean flake and a production problem often comes down to one thing: does the cooling process actually match the material?

BBA Cooling Technology is built on that principle. We design cooling systems that start with the material's behavior, not with a standard heat transfer specification.

Drum coolers, steel belt coolers, caterpillar coolers – each selected and configured based on how your product solidifies, not on what's available off the shelf.

From powder coatings and pharmaceutical ingredients to toner and specialty chemicals – wherever a viscous melt must become a controlled solid.

In our industry, there are materials that get labelled "difficult." Too viscous. Too shear-sensitive. Too reactive. Too sticky. Too temperature-critical.

We see it differently. These materials are not difficult – they are demanding. They require a process that respects their behavior. And process machines engineered precisely around their properties.

That's what we do. Across compounding, reaction, and cooling – we build the process that the material demands.

Demanding materials: Not a problem to solve. A standard to meet.

Material processing ain't easy. But what if there's a simple solution for challenges in processing highly-viscous, sticky and solidifying materials?

Challenging materials need performant processing machinery. The LIST KneaderReactor Technology is a continuous processing approach for highly-viscous, sticky and solidifying materials in the concentrated phase.

The LIST Kneader Reactor combines the processing capabilities of extruders, evaporators, dryers, continuous stirred reactors, and Z-kneaders in a single continuously operating machine – from lab to world scale!

Excellence in Process Intensification.

What does BUSSLIST Group mean from a strategic and financial perspective for us and you? Our CFO Gérard Hofer shares his view.

In 1945, Heinz List invented the Co-Kneader at BUSS. Years later, he founded LIST and built KneaderReactors. The history of these technologies has always been a shared one. What we are doing today is returning to that origin – while opening a new chapter.

Our ambition: to be the first address for demanding processes and materials. Worldwide. Three technology platforms. One responsibility. One partner for our customers.

Most machines are chosen for convenience. Often, the familiar is picked simply because alternatives are unknown or feel risky. They look right on paper – but in production, under real load, limits appear.

They may have a catalogue. References. A sales team that has answered this question hundreds of times.

But those limits only show up when it matters: under load, with the material behaving differently than expected, over time.

The right choice starts with a different question: not which machine is available, but which process – and as a consequence, which process machine – the material actually needs.

That question takes longer to answer.
It requires trials, not brochures.
Process knowledge, not product knowledge.

But it ends in a place the obvious choice rarely reaches: a production line that runs.
And keeps running. For decades.
