🧵 Knowledge Piece: 5 Common Mistakes in Permeability Testing – and How to Avoid Them

Even with the right equipment, small setup errors can lead to unreliable or non-comparable WVTR results. Here are five of the most common mistakes:

1️⃣ Unstable temperature control – Even minor fluctuations affect the vapour pressure gradient and distort results.

2️⃣ Inconsistent relative humidity (RH) – RH must be tightly controlled on both sides of the sample to ensure reproducibility.

3️⃣ Improper sample sealing – Leaks at the sample edge allow vapour to bypass the material, leading to falsely high readings.

4️⃣ Undefined or inconsistent test area – Without a clearly defined and standardized test area, results can't be compared across samples or labs.

5️⃣ Insufficient sample conditioning – Samples that haven't reached equilibrium before testing can produce misleading initial readings.

✔ Avoiding these issues starts with controlled, standardized test conditions – which is exactly what the GraviTest series and EasyPerm 650 are designed to provide.

🧵 WVTR vs. Diffusion Resistance – What's the Difference?

These values are related, but they describe different things – and they're often mixed up.

WVTR (Water Vapour Transmission Rate) is a directly measured value: the mass of water vapour passing through a specific sample per unit area and time (e.g. g/m²/24h), under defined temperature and humidity conditions. Because it's measured on an actual sample, it depends on that sample's thickness.

The µ-value (water vapour diffusion resistance factor) is a calculated, dimensionless value. It expresses how many times more resistant a material is to vapour diffusion compared to the same thickness of still air. Because it's a ratio, the µ-value itself is independent of the sample's thickness.

The Sd-value (equivalent air layer thickness) goes one step further: it's calculated as the permeability of air multiplied by the partial pressure difference, divided by the measured WVTR. It is expressed in metres and tells you how thick a layer of still air would need to be to offer the same resistance as the actual material.

EN 1931 defines the procedure for measuring WVTR and calculating the moisture flow density and the diffusion resistance number. The GraviTest series is conform to EN 1931.

🧵 Standard Explained: ISO 15496 – Measuring Water Vapour Permeability of Textiles

ISO 15496 defines a method for measuring the water vapour permeability of textiles for quality control purposes. Unlike other test setups, it avoids the problem of saturated desiccant, making it particularly relevant for breathable and outdoor fabrics.

This standard is often used alongside JIS L1099 B1+B2, one of the most common methods for measuring WVTR/MVTR (moisture vapour transmission rate) in the outdoor textile sector.

The GINTRONIC IDC-6 is built to perform exactly this kind of testing: it's conform to both ISO 15496 and JIS L1099 B1+B2, features integrated temperature control for both the water bath and air, and can test up to 6 samples simultaneously – without requiring an additional heating cabinet or tempered room.

🧵 Product Comparison: GraviTest 9250-50 vs. 9400-50 – Which system fits your needs?
Both instruments are based on the same GINTRONIC GraviTest platform for fully automated, gravimetric water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) testing – but each is optimized for a different application.

GraviTest 9250-50
Equipped with a high-precision 0.01 mg balance (max. load 250 g), this system is built for materials with very low WVTR, such as v***r barriers and packaging films. It performs these measurements 2–3x faster than the standard GraviTest and can be configured with up to 12 test stations. Compliant with ISO 2528, EN ISO 12572, EN 1931, ASTM E96 and other standards.

GraviTest 9400-50
Featuring a balance with a maximum load of 420 g, this system is designed for thick and heavy samples up to 50 mm, such as insulation material, wood panels, gypsum board and concrete. Thanks to its measuring chamber design, it remains compliant with EN ISO 12572, BS 3177, EN 1931, DIN 53122, ASTM E96, DIN 52615 and more.

Reliable WVTR measurements depend on more than just the instrument itself.
To achieve reproducible and comparable results, testing conditions must follow clearly defined standards such as ISO 2528, DIN 53122 or ASTM methods.

Key indicators of a standard-compliant WVTR test include:
✔ Defined temperature conditions
✔ Controlled relative humidity (RH)
✔ Proper sample sealing to avoid leakage
✔ Clearly defined test area
✔ Stable and reproducible test setup

Even small deviations in these parameters can significantly influence transmission results.
Controlled conditions are therefore essential for accurate evaluation of barrier materials and packaging performance.

Tech Focus: How Climate Conditions Affect Test Results
Accurate material testing requires stable and controlled environmental conditions.
Parameters such as temperature and relative humidity (RH) have a direct impact on measurement results — especially in WVTR testing.

Even minor deviations can lead to significant variations in results.

Key influencing factors include:
✔ Temperature – affects diffusion rates
✔ Relative humidity (RH) – drives moisture transmission
✔ Airflow conditions – impacts stability of the environment
✔ Equilibration time – ensures consistent starting conditions

Reliable testing therefore depends on precise control of these parameters.
Gintronic systems support this through both high-precision control and integrated climate management, depending on the application.

Application Insight: Packaging Solutions for the Food Industry
Food packaging must protect products from moisture to ensure quality, safety and shelf life.

The Water Vapour Transmission Rate (WVTR) is a key parameter when evaluating barrier performance.

Depending on the material, different factors influence packaging performance:
✔ Barrier properties of films and multilayer structures
✔ Moisture sensitivity of the packaged product
✔ Paper-based vs. polymer-based materials
✔ Defined storage and environmental conditions

Accurate WVTR testing helps ensure that packaging materials meet the required protection levels throughout the product lifecycle.

Gintronic systems support reliable WVTR measurements for both film-based and paper-based food packaging applications.

Product Insight: Why EasyPerm 650 is ideal for TAPPI T523
Accurate WVTR testing of paper and packaging materials requires strictly controlled test conditions.
The standard TAPPI T523 defines how water vapour transmission must be measured to ensure reliable and comparable results.

The EasyPerm 650 from Gintronic AG is designed to meet these requirements in a controlled and efficient setup:
✔ Integrated temperature control
✔ Defined and stable test conditions
✔ Reliable sample sealing
✔ Controlled airflow for reproducible results

By combining these parameters in a single system, the EasyPerm 650 enables consistent WVTR measurements without the need for complex external setups.

Comparison: Sensor-Based Systems vs. Gravimetric Measurement
Water Vapour Transmission Rate (WVTR) can be determined using different measurement principles — most commonly sensor-based systems and the gravimetric method.

Both approaches are widely used, but they differ significantly in how results are generated and validated.
Sensor-based systems measure water vapour using detection sensors:
✔ Fast measurement results
✔ Suitable for high-throughput testing
✔ Dependent on calibration and sensor stability

Gravimetric measurement determines WVTR via mass change over time:
✔ Direct physical measurement principle
✔ High accuracy and traceability
✔ Less sensitive to sensor drift

The choice of method depends on application requirements, standards, and desired precision.
