🤓Did you know??🤓
During winter (+10 to -20 C) the bees form into a
‘ Wintertraube’. They huddle together and form into a ball that takes up between 3 to 6 frames in the brood chamber. You can think of this ball as a thick winter coat 🧥that keeps all the bees warm and dry. The temperature in the middle can get between 20-30 C.
Isn’t nature absolutely amazing? 😀

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmassssss🎹🎹
Everywhere you gooooo…..🎤🎵🎶

We’ve just had our first magical snow fall for the season here in Basel and we’re looking forward to many more while cosying up to the fire with a *insert favourite warm drink here.☕🥃
Something about the darkness, that’s warmly lit up by yellow fairy lights, and snowflakes gently drifting down from the sky, is so comforting ❄️🎆
Cheers and Enjoy this time everyone!

And of course don't forget about social distancing🧡

What on earth are The Beehive bees up to?🤔
As the temperature drops the bees are making closer connections with each other. Bees don’t leave the hive once the temperature drops below 15 degrees celcius. They form a little ball in the hive and hunker down until it becomes warmer again. By this time, the worker bees have kicked out the male drone bees and it’s just the worker bees and the queen🐝👑They've also got enough stored honey to last them throughout the colder months.

What’s happening at The Beehive apiary you ask? 🤷‍♂️🤷

Well, we’ve just finished the second varroa treatment that makes sure that the bees don’t have to deal with the pesky Varroa mite. We’ll check the number of mites that fall off within the next few days and that will tell us if we need to do a final treatment during colder months when there’s no brood in the hive. We’ll feed our bees a 3:2 sugar syrup so that they have enough food stores for the winter.

I’m actually super curious about the bee calendar for tropical beekeepers. How is your calendar different? What do you do around this time of year during the cooler/rainy season?

Did you know?
Varroa is the biggest natural threat to the honey bee? If you magnify a varroa mite in relation to a human, it would be the size of a rabbit. 🐇🤯

Originally, the varroa mite comes from South East Asia and lived in coexistence with the Eastern Honey Bee, Apis Cerana, in such a way that they found a way to outlive a varroa infestation. For example, they are able to smell varroa in a cell which is why they wouldn’t cap those cells or even pull the larvae with the varroa out of it. The bees also adapted their development time >>Their bees develop in only 18 days compared to 21 days. By doing so the varroa can multiply less in the cells. 💪👀

When the Trans-Siberian Railway was built, 🚆🚞 south eastern bees were transported to Russia where the Varroa Mite infested the local bees. From there the mite spread nearly around the globe. Only Australia has not yet been affected by the mite....

Phew! These past couple of weeks have been a tad bit hectic,🦸‍♀️ so this week I was inspired to share my yummy beeswax lip balm recipe that feels "oh-so-lush" on dry lips…👄 We can all benefit from little pampering now and again. Enjoy beautiful people 👑

Beeswax lip balm

1 part beeswax
1 part shea butter
3 parts coconut oil or sweet almond oil
6 drops of essential oil, I used evening primrose this time.
Warm the beeswax in a water bath until it has melted, then add shea butter and coconut oil (or sweet almond oil). Pour into a small container or tin and let it harden. You are now ready for soft, supple lips baby!
