BID Canada’s story began in 1981, when Ray Sullivan founded Basic Industrial Design as a one-person engineering service providing drawings and layouts for industrial projects.

Over four decades, the company has grown, bringing together engineering, fabrication and material handling expertise here in Woodstock, New Brunswick.

Behind that growth are the people who have shared their skills, solved problems and built lasting relationships with our customers along the way.

Chris is working on roll cases for a sawmill customer here in our BID shop in Woodstock, NB. While we often share projects for mining, ports and other industries, sawmills are also part of the work happening on our floor.

Our connection with McDonough brings together the fabrication skills, sawmill knowledge and experience of our teams in Woodstock and Eau Claire. Working across both locations helps us draw on the right people and capabilities for each customer’s needs.

That teamwork shows up in the equipment we build and the service behind it, from the first conversation through to the finished work.

A conveyor moving limestone has a different job than one moving hot clinker, even when they’re part of the same cement plant.

Temperature, moisture, particle size and abrasiveness all affect how material moves and how equipment wears. Those differences shape everything from conveyor selection to chute design and the liners that protect transfer points.

In cement and lime production, keeping material moving means understanding what’s on the belt and what happens when it reaches the next stage.

We measure our phone screens in inches, but the story behind them can start kilometres underground.

Near Sudbury, Ontario, Vale’s Creighton nickel mine extends more than two kilometres below the surface. For perspective, that’s deeper than three CN Towers stacked on top of each other.

Copper and nickel are part of Canada’s mining story, and metals like these help make the electronics we rely on every day. But getting them out of the ground is only one part of the journey. Material has to move through several stages of handling and processing before they can be used.

At BID, our part of that bigger story is designing and building equipment that keeps bulk material moving.

We often share photos of large equipment and completed projects. Walking through the BID shop, those are usually the first things that catch your eye, too.

But a closer look shows the details that make it all work: a weld placed precisely where it belongs, a cut made to the specified dimension, or holes positioned so components line up during assembly.

When individual pieces come together to form an entire conveyor, a few millimeters can be the difference between components fitting as intended and needing adjustments. The accuracy of each part matters to the next person assembling, installing or maintaining the equipment.

Our team are craftspeople who understand how their work fits into the bigger picture. Their skill, judgement and attention to detail are built into every piece, even when the finished project gets most of the attention.

There’s a lot of work behind the guards that surround industrial equipment. These guards for a screen plant tower are laid out in our BID shop, ready for the next stage of the project.

Guarding needs to help protect the people working around machinery while allowing access for inspection and maintenance.
How each piece fits into the surrounding equipment matters to the people who will work with it every day.

When a vessel arrives at a bulk terminal, its cargo still has a journey ahead. Conveyors, chutes and storage systems connect the dock with the trucks, trains and industrial operations that carry materials to their next destination.

What that equipment handles makes a difference. Iron ore brings significant weight and abrasion, while salt requires careful consideration of corrosion. Moisture, weather and exposure to the marine environment also influence how the equipment is designed and maintained.

Those details are an important part of keeping bulk cargo moving reliably through a port.
