Meet Max Berube, a fitter in our Woodstock shop and part of the BID Canada team for the past year.

Originally from Grand Falls, Max moved to Woodstock as a teenager and later studied Welding and Fabrication at NBCC Woodstock. Today, he puts that training to work fitting and assembling components for the wide variety of projects that move through our shop.

With projects at different stages of fabrication and assembly, just about every part of the floor is being put to good use. It’s always great to see a busy shop and so many different projects taking shape at the same time.

There is a lot that happens to mined material between coming out of the ground and leaving the site. It may go through crushing, screening, conveying, stockpiling and loadout, and each part of that process has to work with the next.

We took a closer look at the material handling side of mining, including why transfer points matter, how site layout affects material movement and the role stockpiles play in keeping things moving.

A chute might look like one of the simpler parts of a material handling system, but there’s quite a bit riding on getting it right.

The angle, material, size, transition points and even what happens inside the chute can affect how consistently material moves from one piece of equipment to the next. Get those details wrong and you can end up with buildup, excessive wear, plugging or material going somewhere it shouldn’t.

That’s why chutes aren’t always an off-the-shelf piece of equipment. They need to be designed around what you’re moving, how much of it you’re moving and the equipment on either side.

Earlier this year, Mike celebrated a pretty impressive milestone: 25 years with BID/McDonough!

A New Brunswick native through and through, Mike grew up in Kilburn, studied Civil Engineering at NBCC and eventually made his way to BID. Twenty-five years later, he’s still an important part of our team.

Outside of work, he keeps busy with family, the outdoors and 14 years of giving back through the Carleton County Toy Run.

A big thank you to Joshua DeMerchant for spending the summer with us at BID Canada!

Josh joined our engineering department and quickly became a valuable part of the team. He worked primarily in 3D CAD design on everything from bridge expansion joints and downspouts to belt conveyor components. He also gained experience in our ERP system, helping prepare jobs for release to production.

Our biggest challenge with Josh was keeping him busy. He had a habit of finishing whatever we gave him ahead of schedule and asking what was next.

Josh is hoping to return to BID next summer, and we would be very happy to have him back. Thanks for all your hard work this summer, Josh, and best of luck as you head back to school!

In 1981, engineering drawings were done by hand, fax machines were still considered modern technology, and the idea of designing a conveyor system on a computer was a long way from everyday practice.

That was the environment when BID Canada got its start. Over 45 years, the tools, technology and scale of industrial projects have changed considerably. BID has changed with them, growing from a one-person engineering service into the team we have today.

Did you know that Canada is the world’s largest producer of potash, mining approximately 25 million tonnes in 2024, which accounted for nearly 33% of global production?

To put that into perspective, that’s roughly the same weight as 1.5 million fully loaded school buses.

It’s a good reminder of just how much material needs to move through a mining operation, from extraction and processing to storage and shipping.
