Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It's a day to remember the children who never came home from residential schools, and to honor the survivors, their families and their communities.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is here in Winnipeg, at the University of Manitoba. Their website is a good place to start.

Myth: "Metal siding will need repainting like wood does."

Fact: it's finished at the factory, not painted on site. That's a different thing.

Wood siding sits on a repainting cycle — strip, prime, repaint, every so many years, forever. Factory-finished metal isn't on that clock. There's no bare surface waiting for a coat.

That doesn't mean you ignore it. Rinse dirt off now and then, keep an eye on it, and deal with anything that gets damaged. How much upkeep it wants depends on the product and the shape it's in.

But you're not booking a painter every few years, and for a lot of people that's the whole reason they went metal.

How to install standing seam metal roofing on a gambrel roof.

A gambrel is the barn-style roof two different slopes on each side, with a break where they meet. That break is the tricky part, and it needs a trim shaped to the exact angle of your roof.

There's no standard gambrel trim. Every one is different, because every gambrel is different. We fabricate them to spec in our shop here in Winnipeg.

Pre-painted or galvanized? Two different jobs.

PRE-PAINTED is steel with the colour put on at the factory. That's our colour chart 33 standard shades, plus textured and woodgrain ranges, with trims to match. It's what you use anywhere people will see it.

GALVANIZED is bare steel with a zinc coating. Silver, no colour, nothing applied over it. It's what you use where the finish doesn't matter shop liners, fencing, farm buildings, anywhere the job matters more than the look.

The short version: if someone's going to look at it, you probably want pre-painted. If it's out of sight and doing a job, galvanized does the same work.

Myth: "A metal roof will wreck my WiFi."

Fact: your WiFi router sits inside the house with you. That's where the signal comes from, and that's what it has to get through — walls, floors, furniture, distance.

What actually affects how well it works:
• Where the router sits in the house
• How many walls the signal has to cross
• How old the router is
• How many devices are on it

The roof isn't between you and your router. If the WiFi is patchy in the back bedroom, the fix is usually moving the router, adding a second one, or replacing an old one.

Worth knowing before you rule out metal for the wrong reason.

Two minutes now saves you a headache in five years.

When your metal roof or siding goes on, write down:
• The colour name "Charcoal," not "the grey one"
• The profile
• The gauge
• Where and when you bought it

Then put it somewhere you'll actually find it. With the house papers, or take a photo of the note on your phone.

Why it matters: when you add a garage, extend a deck roof, or need a panel replaced years later, that one note is the difference between a quick match and a guessing game.

Worth knowing colours and ranges change over time, and there can be slight differences between production batches. So an exact match isn't always possible. Having the details written down gives you the best shot at it.

The detail people forget until the roof is already on.

Your screws don't have to be silver. Ours come painted, and so do the rivets so they blend into the panel instead of dotting across it in rows.

Two ways people go with it:
• Match everything to the panel, so the fasteners disappear
• Match the panel and contrast the trim, so the edges stand out on purpose

Neither is wrong. But picking on purpose looks better than using whatever's in the box.

Butyl tape or sealant? They're not the same thing.

BUTYL TAPE goes between two pieces of metal that overlap. It sits inside the joint, gets squashed flat when the panels go together, and never dries hard.

That's the point of it. Metal expands and shrinks as the temperature changes, and the tape moves with it instead of cracking.

One rule: butyl has to stay hidden. Sunlight breaks it down, so it's not for anywhere it'll sit in the sun.

SEALANT is the one in a tube, for the joints you can see panel ends, flashings, around pipes. It dries hard, handles the weather, and ours comes in over 14 colours so it blends into the panel.

Use the wrong one in the wrong spot and you'll be back at that joint sooner than you'd like.

Whatever you're working on, follow the instructions that came with your panels.
