Buying a used ultrasound system can be a smart investment, as long as you know what to look for.

Before you buy, make sure you check:

• The probes. They typically wear faster than the console, so check their condition, age, and image quality, not just the system itself.

• Serviceability. Confirm the system can still be serviced, repaired, and that replacement parts are available.

• Warranty. Understand exactly what's covered and for how long.

• Preventive maintenance (PM). Ask when the system last underwent preventive maintenance and whether service records are available. A well-maintained system is often a better indicator of reliability than age alone.

• Clinical fit. Make sure the software, transducers, and imaging capabilities match the exams you perform.

A quality used system from a supplier who stands behind it can provide years of reliable service.

In a mixed and equine practice, the same day can take you from a clinic table to the side of a stall. The Vetus M11 is built exactly for this.

Field work is hard on equipment. Dust, temperature swings, and constant transport wear down a system that wasn't made for it. The Vetus M11 is designed to hold up to that, so the image you get on a farm call is the same one you'd get in the clinic.

Here are the probe types that come up most, and where each fits:

• Linear: High-resolution imaging of superficial structures such as MSK, vascular, small parts, and soft tissue.

• Curved (Convex): Abdominal, obstetric, and general imaging requiring greater depth.

• Phased Array: Cardiac imaging and intercostal examinations where a small acoustic window is needed.

• Endocavitary: Women's health.

The right ultrasound isn't the most expensive one or the cheapest one. It's the one that fits how your clinic works, backed by a supplier who actually answers when something goes wrong.

That’s why point-of-care systems like the TE7 and MX8 get used for it. Fast to set up, easy to bring to the patient.

Is it better to buy or lease an ultrasound machine?

There is no right or wrong answer. It all comes down to how your clinic handles money, not which system is actually better.

Buying makes sense when you have the capital and want to own the equipment outright. You’re not carrying a monthly payment, and once it’s paid off, you own it.

Leasing helps when you would rather keep cash free for other parts of the practice, or when you expect to upgrade in a few years and don’t want to be stuck with aging equipment. It also spreads the cost into predictable payments, which some clinics prefer for planning.

It’s the quick look that helps a team get oriented fast.

Is there free fluid in the abdomen? Does something look off before a fuller workup? In a busy practice, that kind of fast answer changes how the rest of the appointment goes.
