Happy World Biofuel Day! Anaerobic digestion and biogas are the only well-established carbon negative fuels available and a key component of a lower carbon future!

With landfills quickly filling across Canada and the USA, there is great potential to divert organic waste and make anaerobic digesters a large part of organic waste management while also reducing the amount of methane being released to the atmosphere.

Anaerobic digestion is a tried-and-true technology that not only reduces methane emissions but also produces fuel in the form of biogas and RNG. We are proud to have been working in this industry for more than 35 years and supporting our clients as they do this important work.

When assessing a new feedstock for anaerobic co-digestion, it’s important to consider your biogas management, treatment, and upgrading processes to ensure you have the necessary equipment to handle new materials and potential impurities. For example, moisture and impurities in your biogas can corrode piping and gas handling equipment. New feedstocks may introduce new biogas impurities like terpenes or siloxanes, or higher impurity loads that your existing biogas management equipment is not designed to handle.

People overfeed their anaerobic digester and hope for the best biogas production and very high methane content %, but sometimes it ends up in VFA spikes, foam, or pH swings.

Overfeeding happens for a lot of reasons:
- The feedstock composition changed unintentionally due to feedstock variability
- The feedstock volume increased due to variability
- Business & investor pressure to tighten the timeline
- Impatience

Biogas projects make value from waste, create renewable energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It seems like a winning combination - but technical knowledge doesn't always translate into bankable projects.
