🌲🌊 This week, the team travelled to hitacu (Ucluelet First Nation) to begin enabling works for a new sewer lift station replacement, a critical project supporting core wastewater services for the community.

After an early start and a very rainy day on site, it was bittersweet to have one of our co-op students there to see the project she worked so hard on all term finally break ground. Grateful she got to help start it before her term wrapped.

…and the picture of dirt? Spencer Touchie (Director of Asset Management and Capital Infrastructure for the Nation) gave our team a brief learning on what to look for in soils to identify high risk with increased archeological potential.

🦅 Eagles overhead, sandpipers along the shore, hummingbirds buzzing by - a reminder of how special it is to work in places like this.

Now - back to work 🌧️

We’re sending a heartfelt háw’aa / thank you to Justin Eagle, who wrapped up his time at Gwaii Engineering last month as he heads off on an exciting new adventure in New Zealand! 🇳🇿

Justin has been with Gwaii since the very beginning in 2017. From his sharp technical skills and dedication to his work, to his humour, energy, and talent for bringing people together — Justin has helped shape the culture of our team in countless ways.

We are going to miss him immensely, but we’re also incredibly excited to see where this next chapter takes him.

Thank you for everything, Justin. You’ll always be part of the Gwaii family, and we hope our paths cross again down the road!! 🌿

This year, the Gwaii team came together to create this collaborative piece of art - small orange shirts folded from origami paper, placed on the branches of an arbutus tree (beautifully drawn by a team member!) 🧡

This small act reminded us of the importance of slowing down, creating space for learning and connecting, and recognizing the ongoing impacts of residential schools.

Thank you to Gladia and Lubitza for organizing this for our team!

Nothing beats seeing your designs take shape in real life 😍 Last week, Jared had the chance to visit Tla’amin Nation and walk through the site of a new subdivision project we’re proud to be working on.

This project will bring much-needed housing to community members 🏠
Through multiple community engagement sessions, our team has been listening closely to ensure the design truly reflects the needs and priorities of the Nation.

Kyle was up in the beautiful Tla’amin Nation last week, carrying out survey work for a major new project that’s just getting underway.

Our team at Gwaii has been fortunate to work alongside Tla’amin on several initiatives, and it’s exciting to see new infrastructure taking shape for the community.

And of course, no trip is complete without a little four-legged company 🐶
