Massing models are one of the first steps in our design process.

They’re used to explore how a building can sit within the site, testing scale, form, and how it responds to the terrain. At this stage, nothing is fixed. The architecture is still evolving.

These models create a way to experiment, to study different approaches, and to understand how far a design can be pushed. They also help establish a client’s comfort level early on, before moving into more detailed development.

The most important part of designing a cottage is understanding how it will be used.
Whether it’s a weekend escape, a full-time home, or a place shared with extended family, those decisions shape everything that follows.

From time spent on the water to slow mornings, or winter weekends, the design should reflect the rhythm of how you actually live there.

It’s less about trends and more about creating a space that supports the life happening inside it.

Currently in design, Ellis features a unique sequence of arches that form a front terrace and a tinted glass curtain wall that frames views to the garden while providing privacy. Our talented team works with clients to develop designs that meet their needs, functionally and stylistically.

What’s the best way to maximize a waterfront property?

It starts with prioritizing access to the water and the views that come with it. Not by building bigger, but by thinking more intentionally about how each space engages with the lake.

Open sightlines, considered placement of glass, and outdoor areas that face the water all play a role. Decks, docks, and patios aren’t just extensions of the home, they’re positioned to stay connected to what’s happening beyond them.

When people picture a cottage, they often think of log cabins, post-and-beam structures, or A-frame chalets.

Modern architecture offers a different approach, one that leans into openness, light, and a strong connection to the outdoors. Expansive glass, clean lines, and honest materials create spaces that stay closely tied to the surrounding landscape.

At its core, cottage living is about being immersed in nature. Modern design simply approaches that idea in a more pared-back way.

The roles of architects and builders are often framed as separate or even opposing, but in practice they function as complementary parts of the same process.

The architect leads the design phase, shaping the vision, spatial experience, and intent of the project. The builder then takes that vision and focuses on ex*****on, managing construction, timelines, and budget on site.

While their responsibilities differ, the objective is shared: working together to make a client’s dreams real.

Designing in cottage country isn’t about reshaping the land, it’s about responding to it.
With exposed rock, sloping terrain, and controlled water levels, every decision starts with what’s already there.

Instead of flattening the site, the architecture follows it, stepping toward the water and preserving the strongest natural features.
It’s an approach that’s rooted in working with the land, not against it.
