Throwback Thursday 🏗️

On this day back in 2020, we were on site carrying out the crane pad inspection for the Grandin project for our long time client Cemrock Concrete & Construction, captured in the upper photo. A critical early milestone that quietly sets the tone for everything that follows.

Fast forward from excavation and reinforcement to the finished product below — a 21-storey residential tower with 222 units, located just south of Jasper Avenue in downtown Edmonton, right in the heart of the Grandin neighbourhood.

From groundworks to skyline impact, it’s always rewarding to look back and see how early engineering decisions translate into completed communities.
Project successfully completed in 2021.

Moments like these are a great reminder that every tower starts with details you don’t see once the building rises.

✨ A Tale of Two Cities — Divided by Light! ✨

This aerial night view beautifully captures the contrast along Boundary Road — the line separating Vancouver on the left and Burnaby on the right.
You can literally see the difference in infrastructure modernization:
Vancouver’s streets still glow with the warm orange hue of traditional sodium lights.

Burnaby’s roads shine bright with crisp, energy-efficient LED lighting.
A stunning reminder of how technology and sustainability can transform the urban landscape — one streetlight at a time 💡

Do you prefer the nostalgic amber glow or the sharp white clarity of LED?

🏗️ Foundations in Steel Buildings — Open Shed vs. Enclosed Structure

In high seismic regions, foundation design depends heavily on how lateral and wind loads reach the ground.

Here’s a simple comparison between two common configurations:
Open Shed: lighter structure, smaller wind drag, and usually less concrete in the foundations — but with concentrated seismic forces at corner columns.

Enclosed Building: heavier system with wall cladding that attracts higher wind pressures and base shear, often resulting in larger and more continuous foundations.

Interestingly, while enclosed buildings resist more wind loads, their walls don’t necessarily transfer seismic loads — the steel frames and bracing systems do.

Understanding these load paths early in design helps optimize footing sizes, reduce cost, and improve constructability — especially in high seismic areas.

📐 Which type do you think results in a more efficient structural system overall — the open shed or the enclosed building?

🔍 Fatigue Stresses and Steel Beam Failure

This photo shows a classic example of fatigue cracking in a steel beam connection — a type of damage that can develop silently over time.
Even when a structure appears sound, repeated cyclic stresses can gradually initiate micro-cracks at stress concentration points such as bolt holes, weld toes, or abrupt geometric changes.

These cracks slowly propagate under service loads until they reach a critical size, resulting in partial or complete fracture.

Fatigue is not caused by overloading — it’s caused by repetition. That’s why inspection, monitoring, and fatigue-resistant detailing are vital for long-term structural integrity.

At Hingeneering Consulting, our team can assist with:
Root cause analysis and failure investigation
Finite element analysis (FEA) for stress and fatigue assessment
Recommendations for retrofit, strengthening, or redesign
Preventive strategies to extend the service life of existing structures
If your structure has shown early signs of cracking or distress, we’re here to help.

Infrastructure & Bridges – Redefining Connectivity in Alberta & BC

In Western Canada, infrastructure is the backbone that binds communities, industries, and regional economies. For Alberta and British Columbia, bridges and connective structures don’t just span rivers—they span opportunity.

📍 Why Now Matters

▪️ The Government of Canada recently committed $33.1 million in Alberta and BC under the National Trade Corridors Fund to support multiple infrastructure and bridge projects designed to strengthen freight, rail, and port connectivity.
▪️ Across Canada’s public infrastructure, bridges and road assets are aging: many municipal bridges are over 50 years old, and a significant number of them now require detailed condition assessments or retrofit.
▪️ In Alberta alone, municipal and highway bridge stock is among the largest in the country.

These investments and conditions signal a window of opportunity—and urgency—for strategic bridge and infrastructure engineering.

🔧 What We Deliver at Hingeneering

▪️ Design & Retrofit Expertise
Whether new spans or rehabilitation of existing structures, we deliver structural designs that meet modern load, seismic, and durability demands—tailored for the harsh weather zones of BC and Alberta.
▪️ Constructability & Lifecycle Optimization
We go beyond design: we ensure that bridges can be built efficiently, maintained affordably, and perform reliably over decades—minimizing downtime, cost, and risk.
▪️ Resilience & Climate Adaptation
From scour protection at piers to corrosion mitigation in marine or river environments, we infuse resilience into every element—ensuring structures stand strong in flood, freeze-thaw, and high-wind events.
▪️ Regulatory & Stakeholder Alignment
We navigate provincial codes, municipal approvals, and stakeholder interests to smooth project delivery. With infrastructure under public scrutiny, this alignment is key.

🌉 Why Clients Choose Us

▪️ Local Understanding + Global Standards: We blend knowledge of BC and Alberta geotechnics, hydrology, and construction challenges with global best practices.
▪️ Long-Term Partnerships: Many of our clients return, trusting us with multiple bridges and infrastructure projects over time—not just a one-off job.
▪️ Value through Innovation: Smart material use, intelligent maintenance design, and risk-informed decision-making keep projects under budget and within schedule.

If your region, municipality, or developer group is planning bridge upgrades or new connectivity infrastructure, let’s talk. At Hingeneering, we build more than spans—we build the links that last.

👷‍♂️ When concrete speaks before the engineer does...

This photo captures what happens when structural checks, site supervision, and quality control are not taken seriously. The slab has not only deflected severely but is also showing signs of punching shear distress around the columns — a failure mode that can be sudden and catastrophic.

In construction, shortcuts may not reveal themselves immediately — but concrete never forgets. Proper design, reinforcement detailing, and curing practices are the silent heroes behind every safe building we live and work in.

As engineers, we carry the responsibility to ensure that safety is never compromised. Every slab, every beam, every column tells a story — let’s make sure it’s one of strength, safety, and trust.

🌟 Revolutionizing Construction with Precast Concrete Design! 🌟
At HINGENEERING Consulting, we’ve taken a bold step into the world of Precast Concrete Design, delivering innovative solutions for faster, stronger, and more sustainable construction projects. With the rising costs of Tariff’s on the horizon, precast concrete could be a cheaper and more suitable option.
🔍 What is Precast Concrete?
Precast concrete involves casting structural elements—like wall panels, slabs, and beams—in a controlled off-site environment. These high-quality components are then transported to the site for quick and efficient assembly, making construction faster, safer, and more sustainable.
🏗️ Our Recent Work
We’ve partnered with an Alberta precast supplier to design wall and slab panels and engineer robust connections for a recreational facility. This project has allowed us to explore new opportunities and expand our expertise to serve clients across Alberta, British Columbia, and beyond.
