Formula UBC Racing

Formula UBC Racing The competition concept is that a fictitious company has hired a team to design and build a prototype vehicle to be evaluated for production.

Formula UBC Racing is an engineering student team that designs, builds, and races an open-wheeled, formula-style race car for competition each year at Formula SAE Michigan. Formula UBC is an engineering student team that competes in the international Formula SAE (FSAE) Collegiate design series and has been active for the past 25 years. The car is judged on: a business plan, overall engineering des

ign, production cost, and finally is raced to evaluate performance. The competition puts students in a real world situation where research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, managing and fund raising are all major considerations. A volunteer run team of 30-40 students from various undergraduate and graduate engineering disciplines as well as select other faculties make this project a reality. Each year, a new chassis must be fabricated. This leads to most components being redesigned and improved upon each year.

Curious about what it’s like to build a career in motorsport?

Join UBC's motorsports teams for an evening featuring women working and competing in the industry, from motorsport engineering to professional racing.

Hear about their career journeys, experiences in a male-dominated field, challenges and accomplishments, and advice for students looking to get involved in motorsport.

We’ll also be showcasing UBC’s own motorsport design teams and giving you a chance to ask our speakers your questions!

SUB-TEAM HIGHLIGHT: Aerodynamics

The Aerodynamics subteam harnesses the airflow around the car to create downforce, reducing lap times while maintaining cooling performance. Our process starts in research, learning about various aerodynamic principles and devices that help our car's performance. Next we use Computer Aided Design (CAD) to design and iterate aerodynamic devices, then iteratively assess and improve their performance based on highly detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Once finalized, we manufacture the parts from lightweight, high-performance pre-impregnated carbon fibre.

SUB-TEAM HIGHLIGHT: Frame & Body

The Frame & Body team is the car's backbone. The team designs, builds, and validates the structure that supports all of the car's subsystems and load transfer from suspension, powertrain, and other components attached to the car. Members have the opportunity to learn and apply skills in structural analysis using Solidworks modelling, Ansys FEA, and hands-on manufacturing using various materials and tools among other skills. Our work ensures that every subsystem integrates seamlessly, providing rigidity, safety, and reliability for the entire vehicle.

SUB-TEAM HIGHLIGHT: Suspension

The suspension subteam focuses on where the rubber meets the road. We optimize the grip, handling and stability of the car through analyzing vehicle dynamics, modelling tires, and designing mechanical systems. Testing and tuning the car to ensure handling that our driver can rely on, extracting the maximum performance from the car. Suspension systems that we design and manufacture include: anti-roll bars, bellcranks, brakes, control arms, steering. If you want to learn about racecar handling, fabrication, and how to work in a face paced team environment, then you should join suspension!

SUB-TEAM HIGHLIGHT: Business & Marketing

As recruitment opens soon, we’re highlighting each of our subteams to give you a closer look at what they do, what they work on, and how they contribute to Formula UBC. First up is our Business & Marketing (BSMK) subteam!

The Business and Marketing subteam is responsible for managing the team's public presence, securing essential resources, and representing the team at public events. Our responsibilities include identifying and contacting potential sponsors to obtain funding, materials, and other parts essential to the team's success. We also oversee social media accounts, which involves creating and scheduling professional content to engage with our community, showcase our team's values and hard work, and promote the team's activities. Additionally, we compete in the FSAE Business Case Competition and contribute to the team's competition performance.

Interested in joining BSMK or one of our other subteams? Recruitment opens August 29th!

Thank you to everyone that came out! It was very nice to meet some new faces (and some old ones 😉), and we hope everyone enjoyed their time as much as we did.

A huge thank you to UBC Mechanical Engineering and UBC Engineering for their continued support of Formula UBC. We really appreciate all the resources and opportunities you provide that allow our team to keep learning, building, and growing. Events like this are a great chance for us to connect with the UBC community, share what we've been working on, and meet everyone who supports student engineering at UBC. We’re incredibly grateful to have you behind us!
