From calculating design loads and helping projects meet building code requirements, to performing site visits throughout construction, consulting structural engineers play a critical role in bringing developments to life.

Over the years, our team has contributed to a range of complex projects developing practical and innovative structural solutions through technical expertise, team collaboration, and leading design technology. is an opportunity to recognize the people behind the buildings shaping the communities we live and work in.

On Thursday, May 14th, our Senior Associate Dr. Ehsan Dezhdar presented at the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute - British Columbia Chapter (EERI-BC) Seminar Series on Special Topics in Earthquake Engineering, contributing to discussions around soil-structure interaction and seismic resilience in BC.

Using a detailed case study, the presentation explored how foundation flexibility influences seismic demands within the below-grade portions of concrete shear wall buildings, including impacts to core shear demands, transfer diaphragm forces, storey drift behaviour over the height of the building, and foundation overturning demands.

Thank you to EERI-BC for the opportunity to contribute to the conversation.

The lowest embodied carbon intensity in a dataset of 26 high-rise projects. No new materials or unconventional systems. Just precise + deliberate engineering.

Our team set out to prove that structural refinement alone can move the needle on carbon, and it did. Three strategies drove the result:

- Minimize below-grade volume
- Eliminate structural transfers
- Design the lateral system to the limit, not beyond

252 kgCO₂e/m². Approximately 25% lower embodied carbon. Up to 50% reduction compared to more car-centric developments. An estimated $680,000 in cost-savings.

• Conduct field reviews/structural observations
• Act as the liaison between the design team + construction team
• Review shop drawings, RFIs, and contractor enquires
• Design of concrete, wood frame, steel, and mass timber structures
• Support project engineers with site coordination

You bring a Civil Engineering degree of a Civil Technology Diploma and a valid driver's license + willingness to travel to various project sites across Vancouver Island.

Embodied carbon doesn’t reduce itself. It’s tracked, measured, and designed out.

Our latest ECAP outlines how we’re turning the SE 2050 Commitment Program into day-to-day practice — from internal education to project-level reporting and design decisions. This work is grounded in one principle: you can’t reduce what you don’t measure. Our tools and workflows are built to assess embodied carbon early, when design decisions have the most impact.

The result is a clearer path to lower-carbon structures, backed by data, not assumptions.

Seattle's first cantilevered skypool which extends over the streetscape at First Light.

On March 18, our Senior Associate Dr. Ehsan Dezhdar shared the structural approach behind this 48-storey tower with the Structural Engineers Association of Washington—where long-span design meets real-world constraints.

International Women's Day was yesterday, but the work continues.

This IWD, we asked our team what meaningful support looks like - not from the top, but from wherever you sit.
The answers were consistent: share what you know; open doors you’ve walked through; speak up when someone else can’t. Lasting change lives in the decisions we make when no one is watching.

Give to Gain isn’t just a theme. Engineering thrives on rigour, challenge, and diverse thinking. If we are serious about building a sustainable future, we must be equally serious about building an equitable profession.

Today we celebrate the women across our firm - in engineering, drafting, accounting, administration, marketing, and leadership. Their impact is not confined to title or discipline. It shows up in coordination meetings, financial strategy, sustainability analysis, automation, clear communication, and mentorship.

This year's International Women's Day theme, Give to Gain, is a reminder that progress is built through investment. Give to Gain isn't symbolic - it is structural. It's how stronger teams and better outcomes are built.

Yesterday, we highlighted our internal Life Cycle Assessment tool, specifically designed for engineering. Smart engineering comes down to the people applying the systems.

We asked a few members of our team:
What does smart engineering mean to you, in the context of sustainability?
How are you using real-time data to create more sustainable infrastructure?

As tools evolve – from advanced modelling to integrated data platforms – so does our responsibility. Intelligence in design is technical AND collaborative. The future of sustainable infrastructure will be shaped by the diversity of the perspectives driving it.

What does 1M+ square meters of embodied carbon data tell us?

Our team analyzed 26 project LCAs from 2025 and we have gained a clearer picture of the carbon footprint of concrete towers in British Columbia. The result?

We have identified 3 key considerations to help us and our clients significantly lower the embodied carbon intensity in future developments. From basement design to material specifications, the path to lower carbon buildings is in the details.
