Gold Testing Myths, episode one: "Just bite it."
Straight out of a Western. Gold is soft, so teeth leave a mark. Lead is soft too, and it marks just as nicely. Tastes worse, though.
The magnet. Gold isn't magnetic, true. Neither are copper, brass or tungsten.
Vinegar. Gold doesn't react to it. Neither does gold plating, and the vinegar never gets to what's underneath.
All three answer one question: "Is this definitely not iron?" None of them tells you how much gold is in the piece. Jewelry Lab answers that one in 10 seconds.

How does a machine know it is gold? 🔬
It does not look at colour, weight, or the stamp. It reads energy.
Hit any material with X-rays and its atoms respond by emitting photons at energies fixed by their own structure. Gold emits at 9.71 keV. Silver at 22.16. Copper at 8.05. Those numbers are properties of the elements themselves - unchangeable, unforgeable, identical in a Roman coin and a modern chain.
The analyzer counts photons at each energy and builds a spectrum. Peaks show which elements are present. Peak sizes show how much of each.
No acid. No scratching. No melting. The piece is unchanged, because photons went in and photons came out.

Every gold buyer has had this conversation. The analyzer says 10k. The customer is certain, and often genuinely so - they are repeating what they were told, sometimes decades ago.
Arguing does not work. Showing does.
This is the quiet advantage of a screen the customer can see. The reading is not your opinion against their memory - it is a number both of you are looking at. Run it again on a different spot. Let them watch. If the piece is plated, measure a worn edge against an intact face and the difference speaks for itself.
Most people are not trying to deceive anyone. They inherited a story along with the ring, and the story was wrong before it reached them.

Handheld or benchtop? The honest answer depends on one question: does the sample come to you, or do you go to the sample? 🤔

Handheld (ProSpector 3) - you go to the material. Outcrops, drill core, scrap piles, incoming deliveries. Battery-powered, weatherproof, 200+ samples a day. Accuracy is excellent for field decisions.
