How does a machine know it is gold? 🔬
It does not look at colour, weight, or the stamp. It reads energy.
Hit any material with X-rays and its atoms respond by emitting photons at energies fixed by their own structure. Gold emits at 9.71 keV. Silver at 22.16. Copper at 8.05. Those numbers are properties of the elements themselves - unchangeable, unforgeable, identical in a Roman coin and a modern chain.
The analyzer counts photons at each energy and builds a spectrum. Peaks show which elements are present. Peak sizes show how much of each.
No acid. No scratching. No melting. The piece is unchanged, because photons went in and photons came out.
