“Good fortune” “well being” “auspicious object” “peace” at least that was the original meaning of this symbol in the eastern context.

We never know what we’re going to find. 😳

This week we mourn the loss of a dear friend and mentor, Jack Welton. I first met Jack in 2011 while working at Legacy Vintage. Jack would visit twice a day. In the morning he'd bring a Tim's and at the end of the day he come for a b**r.

For close to a decade, this was a daily ritual. Jack would impart his vast knowledge of everything antique and vintage. I learned much from this man. Our mutual interest in old stuff grew into a true friendship. We often went out on deliveries and turned them into road trips.

In 2017, we did a delivery to New York City. We left Ontario on a cold winter morning around 5.30am. We had two stops, one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan. We reached our final destination around 11pm. It was fun and stressful driving around the city with an antique barber chair and massive antique countertop that hung out 3ft past the tailgate of my truck.

When we arrived at our accommodations, our host offered to take us on a walking tour around the city. I was keen, but Jack was no spring chicken. His feet usually killed him on long walks. He said, "Sure, why not".

We spent hours walking and taking cabs seeing as many sights as we could see. We got to bed around 3am. The city never slept and we didn't either. Jack was kept awake by a cat that would run along the large round ducting in the loft apartment.

Our schedule had us leaving at 7am and we did. We made it back to Ontario through snow, ice and rain, in one piece later that night. It was a trip I'll always remember.

In 2021, I opened Historic House Salvage in Warkworth. Jack was in Cobourg so we no longer got to enjoy our daily coffee and b**r routine. But he would visit me when he could and I'd stop in to see him when I was in Cobourg.

In the last year, months and weeks of Jack's life. We grew even closer. I would share my faith more earnestly than I had done previously. It was in those final weeks that Jack found peace in that same faith. It was the most special time we'd ever spent together. Even better than a trip to New York City. I thank you for your friendship. I will miss you Jack.

See you soon. Nathaniel.

“Do you have anything modern?”

Respectfully… no. That’s kind of the whole theme. 😂
