Proud to share that City of Peterborough Fire Station No. 2—a project delivered full structural engineering for—is featured in SABMag [Sustainable Architecture and Building Magazine] Fall Ontario Focus issue.

This station set a high bar: mass timber structure, post-disaster performance, net-zero energy + carbon, and a strong focus on firefighter wellness. Our role was to ensure the building stands resilient in emergencies, performs efficiently long-term, and supports the City’s sustainability goals without compromise.

Ontario Adopts 2024 Building Code – Major Structural Changes Ahead

The 2024 Ontario Building Code has officially been released, fully adopting the 2020 National Building Code of Canada. This update brings significant changes to Part 4, particularly with increased seismic design parameters that will impact structural design, compliance, and project planning.

If you’re involved in development, architecture, or engineering, it’s critical to understand how these changes affect your projects.

Key Transition Timelines:

🔹 April 2024 – 2024 Ontario Building Code released
🔹 January 1, 2025 – The new Code takes effect (permit applicants can choose to use it)
🔹 March 31, 2025 – Last day to apply under the 2012 Code (if drawings were “substantially complete” before Jan 1, 2025)
🔹 April 1, 2025 – All permit applications must comply with the 2024 Code

We are exiting to announce that the City of Brampton has officially approved the permits for one of our latest projects—a state-of-the-art Long-Term Care Facility. Valued at $55 million, this 3-storey building with a partial basement will bring much-needed additional 160-bed capacity for long-term care spaces to the community, helping meet a critical need for the residents of Brampton.

The architectural design of this facility is truly unique, incorporating elegant temple-inspired elements, as seen in the façade and overall structure. It blends tradition with modern engineering to create a space that is both functional and visually striking.

In line with our commitment to sustainability, this project will also feature low-carbon concrete—a forward-thinking choice that reduces the environmental impact of construction without compromising on durability or quality.

was honored to join the City of Peterborough in celebrating the grand opening of Peterborough’s Fire Station No. 2.

This state of the art facility is by all means not your typical Fire Station design. The new building features a mass timber structure, solar panels, and geothermal for heating and cooling.

It’s been built following Canada’s Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building Standard to help reduce operating and maintenance costs. This landmark project is the City’s first to target Net-Zero Carbon and Net-Zero Energy status.

🌲 Exciting Progress at Nomi Resort 🌲

Last week, our principals and associates gathered for a few days at Nomi Resort for our annual retreat, where we got to experience the natural beauty while seeing our project come to life. Currently, 13 of the planned 48 cottage units are under construction with others soon to start, each designed to integrate seamlessly with the landscape and foster a sense of community.

Our team at AMR Engineering Limited has been thrilled to bring structural expertise to a project that embodies sustainable luxury and immersive nature experiences. These cottages aren’t just units—they’re thoughtfully designed spaces that encourage a sense of community while respecting the natural surroundings.

It’s exciting to see the progress, and we’re already looking forward to the next phase, which will include the addition of amenity buildings to enhance experience.

At , we recently had the privilege of collaborating with and Ashburnham Realty on a striking new building, seamlessly blending elegance with efficient design.

But beyond just the aesthetics, our expertise in structural efficiency helped the developer save significantly on construction costs. Initially challenged by poor soil conditions, we engineered a solution with 10-meter deep caissons to support the structure on bedrock. After careful analysis, we switched from the initial concrete and precast concept design to a steel frame structural system, optimizing the structure to reduce weight and seismic loads. This change alone saved more than half a million dollars in foundation costs, while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the building. Through collaboration and smart structural choices, we achieved both beauty and significant cost savings for the developer.

This project is an example of what can be achieved when design and engineering work hand in hand, achieving both beauty and functionality while remaining cost-effective. We’re proud to have played a part in making this vision a reality, delivering a building that is as structurally sound as it is visually stunning.

Another project in the books for AMR Engineering Limited with the City of Kawartha Lakes! Proud of our teams involvement on the new Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes in Lindsay, Ontario. This new $15 million facility, which officially opened doors earlier this month will now be able to offer spaces to support much needed community based programs in the area. It has been an intersting and exciting journey that took a lot of dedication and hard work to see this facility completed. Grateful for our involement in making this milestone possible!
