The next time a train has you waiting at a crossing, consider one question: why would something that sophisticated need sand? 🛤️
The answer is found where the wheel meets the rail.
Train wheels are steel. Rails are steel.
When operating conditions call for additional traction, trains can apply sand near that contact point.
It is a remarkably straightforward solution inside an enormous transportation system.
Rail operations depend on engines, braking systems, signals, communications equipment, tracks and countless other pieces of infrastructure and technology.
Yet a familiar granular material still has a job aboard.
And unless you already know about it, you could watch trains pass for years without realizing that sand may be travelling with them.
When most people connect aggregate with rail transportation, track ballast is probably the first use that comes to mind.
The connection does not end underneath the rails.
Sometimes the aggregate is riding on the train itself.

Fire prevention on a worksite isn't one action. It's a series of habits practiced every day. 👷
Active worksites can bring together machinery, electrical systems, fuels, combustible materials and activities that generate heat or sparks.
Regular equipment inspections can help identify potential problems. Good housekeeping can keep combustible material from accumulating where it shouldn't. Proper storage and handling practices can reduce risks associated with fuels and other flammable materials. 🛠️
Workers also need to know where emergency equipment is located and understand the procedures to follow if something does go wrong.
Fire prevention starts long before anyone sees smoke.

Aggregate operations bring together geology, engineering, environmental science, technology, skilled trades and land-use planning. 🔬
During a CBM site tour, students may have an opportunity to learn where aggregates come from, how materials are processed and how rehabilitation planning considers the future of the land.
Teachers and parents, what would you want students to learn during a visit? 👷

A working landscape can have more than one chapter. 🌻

Where returning aggregate land to agriculture is an appropriate rehabilitation objective, planning for that future involves more than simply planting an area after extraction.

The final landform, drainage and soil conditions can influence whether land can support productive agricultural uses afterward. 🌽

For some properties, that next chapter may include crops, pasture or other agricultural activity.
