The drywall is up. The doors are hung. And the job stops because the hardware isn’t here.

Hardware is the smallest line on the schedule and the one most likely to blow it. Not because anything went wrong, but because it got specced last and ordered late.

Three moves fix it. Spec early, while the door schedule is still being drawn. Confirm the finish and the handing in writing before anything ships. Lock your quantities so the order is held for your job instead of sold out from under it.

Do that and hardware stops being the thing that surprises you on install day.

Your deadbolt will fail in February. You can catch it in October.

Freeze, thaw and road salt tear through exterior door hardware. Interior-grade finishes pit, discolour and seize, and nobody notices until the key won’t turn at -20.

Go check yours this week. Turn the key. Turn the thumb-turn. Look at the finish where water pools and where the sun hits hardest. Stiff cylinder or a finish that’s going means replace it now, not mid-January.

You can spend a fortune on hardware and still hate your door every single day.

Here is the part nobody warns you about. Most of the complaints we hear are not about the product. The backset is off by a few millimetres, the strike is not square, the reveal is uneven. So the door drags, the latch misses on the first pull, and a four hundred dollar lever starts feeling cheap. The part was fine. The install wasn’t.

Correct backset, square strike, proper reveal. Get those three right and the door closes properly on day one and still closes properly on day four hundred. Get them wrong and no amount of money spent on the hardware fixes it.

You don’t need to be a designer to use the hardware designers use. You just need to know it exists.

Your three year old cannot turn a door k**b. So they hang off it instead.

That is the part nobody tells you. Every pull works the set a little looser, the screws back out, the spindle wears, and eventually the latch stops catching at all. You end up blaming the door. It was never the door.

Levers do not need a grip. Push down and it opens, which means it also opens with an elbow, a hip, or both arms full of groceries and a toddler. Same door, same prep, same holes. Changing door handles over to levers is about an hour of work for a whole floor, and it quietly removes a hundred tiny frustrations you had stopped noticing.

If your kitchen feels slightly off, it is usually not the cabinets.

It is the pulls. A cabinet pull should run about one third of the width of the drawer. Shorter than that and it disappears. Longer and it takes over the door. At a third, the whole run looks intentional.

Order the wrong hand and your keyway ends up upside down.

It is called door handing, and it is the most common reason a custom hardware order has to go back. The check takes ten seconds.
• Stand on the outside of the door, the side it opens away from you
• Note which side the hinges are on. That is the hand
• On any lever with a keyed cylinder, the wrong hand turns the keyway upside down
On a stock interior door lever you can swap it. On a custom or special order, you are waiting on a replacement.
