Is under-slab insulation really worth it? For a high-performance home, the answer is yes. 👍

Skipping under-slab insulation might save a few dollars upfront but it can cost your clients in long-term comfort and energy efficiency.

Heat moves from warm to cold. Without insulation beneath the slab, concrete creates a direct path for heat loss to the ground, making it harder to maintain comfortable interior temperatures.

Here’s how to do it right:
👉 Use high-performance rigid insulation like Halo®️ Subterra®️.
👉 Cut penetrations precisely around plumbing and seal any gaps.
👉 Insulate and seal the perimeter to reduce thermal bridging at the slab-to-wall connection.
👉 Tape the joints to create a continuous layer.

What if your radiant tubing could protect the system AND make installation easier?

High performance doesn’t have to mean high complexity. 🙌🏻

When building to Passive House standards, every connection in the roof assembly matters. But as builder Dennis Borren shows on this Central Alberta project, achieving ambitious performance targets can start with a straightforward approach.

For this build, the team paired 1.5 inches of Halo® Interra® with R-90 blown-in cellulose. Halo Interra provides the air control layer and initial insulation, while the cellulose adds the thermal performance the project requires.

Just as important is how it all connects. Taped joints and carefully sealed roof-to-wall transitions help maintain a continuous air barrier from the ICF walls into the ceiling assembly.

The takeaway: thoughtful detailing can make high-performance construction simpler to execute.

The secret to a flawless roof-to-wall air seal.

When building to Passive House standards, your air control layer has to be continuous, especially at tricky transitions like the roof connection.

In this video, builder Dennis from Borren Builders explains his method for maintaining absolute airtightness using 1.5-inch Halo®️ Interra®️ interior rigid insulation panels.

The process is meticulous but highly effective:
👉 Tape every joint of the Halo Interra panels.
👉 Run a poly layer underneath the top plate and seal it directly to the solid concrete ICF core.
👉 Tape that poly directly to the Interra panels to lock the system together.

The result? A completely uncompromised, continuous air and v***r barrier from the walls straight through the ceiling assembly.
