gan as a research division of Borg-Warner in 1970 with the mandate to develop a technology that would prevent the operation of a vehicle by a drink driver. This life saving innovation became known as the breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID or IID). Comeau acquired both companies: Alcohol Countermeasure Systems Corp. in Canada and Alcohol Countermeasure Systems, Inc. Under his guidance, ACS developed new alcohol sensing technologies used in a variety of applications spanning a variety of markets including automotive, industrial, law enforcement, as well as public and personal safety. The corporate family was restructured in 2005 by creating Alcohol Countermeasure Systems (International) Inc. as the holding company and sole shareholder for the international group of companies that emerged with a single coherent vision for quality products and services that includes:

The financial and social costs of impaired driving are staggering. In 2010, impairment-related crashes resulted in an estimated 1,082 fatalities, 63,821 injuries and damage to 210,932 vehicles in property damage only (PDO) crashes. There were a total of 181,911 crashes, costing an estimated $20.62 billion. These costs factor in fatalities, injuries, property damage, traffic delays, out-of-pocket expenses, hospital/health costs and police, fire and ambulance costs.
