"An evening ABR test as a birthday gift for a child?
Yesterday, I performed this test on a 5 years old boy who had been referred for an ABR because he wouldn't cooperate during the standard hearing tests. Imagine my surprise when entering the patient’s information I noticed that he decided (along with his parents) to come in and have his hearing checked (ABR) instead of staying home to eat birthday cake and unwrap presents on this special for him day 🤯
The boy was excited about this meeting and the new place 🤩 - which as you know isn’t the best mindset before a test that should be performed while the patient should be asleep 😉
I prepared his skin, attached the electrodes, put in an inserts and waited for the patient to fall asleep. Did I mention how excited he was before? 🫣 After waiting for nearly 2 hours and making sure the boy was still lying with his eyes open, trying to strike up a conversation with his mom, I came to conclusion that I’d probably fall asleep myself first 😂 I decided to try starting the ABR test
Imagine my surprise when I saw nice, repeatable waves. Of course there are plenty of artifacts but I managed to obtain a full intensity series for both ears. This might not be a big surprise for Click, but the repeatability was there even at 500 Hz
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Vivosonic Inc. - I think without their equipment, yesterday’s appointment might have turned out differently. The SOAP-Kalman „did the job” 💪
Telling the boy his hearing was normal might not have been the best gift I could have given him (though it’s important information), so the patient received Kajtek the Snail - our clinic’s mascot. The big smile on his face was my greatest reward that evening ☺️
